I think the "recruiting honeymoon" effect is GROSSLY overstated. Most often by horn fans looking to rationalize Sumlin's recruiting success in a way that allows them to believe it will dissipate.

I know what you are saying, but I actually do agree with Ketch in that most new coaches at big schools typically get a bump in recruiting before on the field results. It just appears that high school kids and coaches are not sold on Strong and some are actually turned off by him. You have to admit it is a little surprising how much Sumlin is bitch slapping Strong and that entire program on the recruiting trail.
Maybe its because Strong is a poor communicator or slightly awkward.

I still think he was a terrible hire for them and they are about to circle the drain for some time.

I believe in the honeymoon.
AS LONG AS THE UNIVERSITY IS EXCITED ABOUT THE HIRE.

it's painfully obvious that Strong was hired because he was there. He was greeted by a tepid fan base. There was no honeymoon because it's a shotgun marriage. The recruits know this and pick up on that.

And as long as he is a good fit.

It is obvious part of Charlie's problem is people expect him to be the mayor of Texas like Brown and he doesn't want to do it.

I think what we will learn from this is Texas can NEVER have a "real" coach again. The correct "fit" is a politician at the top thanks to Brown, or your stakeholders will withhold the support you need. The closest Texas can come to good coaching is overpaying coordinators...

Yikes, who signed off on that? Surely someone had to have told Strong it was a bad idea, right?

OMG

It would be too funny if Charlie turns into their version of Fran where it will take (and be part of what helped kill) a completely different staff just to win back the trust of Texas high school coaches.

I don't think Strong's inability to mesh w/ the big money horns is hurting him with recruits. That will hurt him later when he isn't having the success UTx expects. He's going to have a short leash, made even shorter because he isn't the politician Mack was.

But while the "new coach bump" exists, because it's easier to make your sale when you don't have years of failure/mediocrity hanging over your head, that's only PART of the equation. The reality of the situation is that A&M in the SEC is just inherently more attractive than UTx in the B12 (or anywhere else, for that matter, but especially UTx in the B12). Strong can sell potential success at UTx in the B12; Sumlin can sell proven success at A&M in the SEC. Sumlin just has a better product to sell, and will continue to do so unless we crater at a time when UTx has a great year.

And keep in mind, while Strong is not recruiting as well as Sumlin, he's still got the best class in the B12 right now, and he's running circles around Stoops right now. So he's doing fine compared to his actual opponents, just not compared to the one school they actually NEED to beat.

I don't think it's that far fetched.

As it was with us, all it takes is one bad hire to send your program into deep downward spiral.
They have a losing season in year 1, and it could be really hard to get back on track.

He may not be Fran, but he could be a Sherman for them.
If that is the case, they may lose to UNT...

I think the problem is Mack made the job even bigger than Charlie can handle.

Like the closed practices thing. Kids would use Texas to get exposure, as if they were a natural resources that is shared by Texans. That is the kind of stuff that doesn't help you on the field in 2014, but helps the high school coaches back you in 2017 when that school has a 5 star.

Or how Mack would intimidate the heck out of high school coaches with a paternal attitude. That is the kind of stuff that kept Mack on top for so long.

If Charlie kills it year one, wins the Big 12 and makes the playoff then none of that matters. But if he bombs, then he has almost no chance to climb out of the hole as he is turning his back on Mack's old standbys.

This will be a fun season, if only because what happens to Texas will set the tone in the state for a while.

I hate when recruits say no order when it is clearly alphabetical

what's striking about that is he visited Texas over the weekend and they offered him in person on that visit. Then 2 days later they are not in his top 6. Hard to spin that any way but
