Per Robert Goulet's request, here is a running list of all the reasons our fellow RANTards believe Gruden won't coach at Tennessee or will fail if he does take the job. Will update/modify for posterity.

Reasons he won't be VOLS coach:

a) Gruden will cost too much
b) Gruden is just leveraging for a better job elsewhere
c) Gruden has no connection to VOLS
d) No way he would leave his cushy job to coach college
e) If he wanted to coach somewhere he would've already done it
f) Gruden wants an NFL job

Reasons he will fail if VOLS hire him:

a) Gruden hasn't coached in 10 years
b) Gruden can't recruit/hasn't proved he can recruit
c) Gruden hasn't coached at the college level in 30 years
d) Gruden won a superbowl when current players were in diapers
e) Gruden won with Dungy's players
f) Gruden can't develop a QB
g) Gruden can't identify talent
h) Gruden only won 50% of NFL games as a coach
i) Gruden won't be able to implement system in only 20 hours a week
j) Gruden will get UT on probation because he doesn't understand the recruiting rules
k) Gruden's offense is too complicated for college athletes
l) Gruden will leave for the NFL
m) Gruden will get UT on probation because he doesn't understand the recruiting rules

We might also need to keep a running tally of "Gruden won't/can't coach" threads. They are sprouting like weeds out there...

I expect we'll see a lot of people saying Gruden will head to the NFL. I also expect Gruden to come up in coaching search rumors every year.

If it is Gruden then I would be shocked if he struggles on the recruiting trail. There is not some secret code to recruiting that is impossible for outsiders to crack, unless you count handing out Dodge Chargers.

Damn, I'm gonna have to break this out over the break now. It's been so long though, I'll have to google the secret code.

I hope y'all get him, I do; but shouldn't something have happened by now? i'd be fricking pissed if I were a Vol. Maybe it's just the media, but it seems like he's been taking the AD and boosters for a ride with no solid commitment.

Does it really take several weeks to make up your mind? Maybe there are other factors or constraints that I'm unaware of and it's a done deal, but this whole thing smells bad to me.

If he does come, his success is going to be based on whether or not he can be patient and adapt his communication and teaching to kids. That's easier said than done with big ego types. Maybe that's all a show, though. Who knows?

But if it all comes together, could be scary....

No idea what's happening or isn't happening but the ideas for why it's taking a while are numerous including not distracting from current players (especially seniors finishing out the season) and staff/difficulties working out of MNF contract/difficulties handling his many other endorsement deals that is unusual for a coach to have/trying to hire assistance/etc

The main reason I'd say I have any faith at all is bc Gruden hasn't come out and shut down the rumors himself like he always has before. That doesn't mean he isn't an attention whore enjoying all this but to me it's at least a sign that he is seriously considering it

Not to mention our ADs actions and statements would be quite frankly bizarre if he doesn't KNOW that we are going to get a serious big name coach

If he says the things he's said not only to the public but also privately to recruits (and whatever he's said it has impacted the recruits) only to hire Mike Norvell he's gonna look like a total idiot

Or you know, just like a Tennessee AD

FWIW, Dooley was fired 11/18/12. Gruden shot down the rumors on 11/28/12. His agent shot them down on 11/30/12.
