I’m curious what the analytics say in that situation.
Seems like you would want to go for the TD first. A field goal after recovering an onside kick is much easier and requires much less time.

You have no idea how much time it may take to get a TD or maybe you waste a lot of time and end up needing to kick a FG anyway when you could have done it earlier.
It's been the general consensus to kick the FG once you get in range in those situations. The math changes if you hit a play that takes you inside the 10 or somewhere around there when you're really close but if you end up around the 30 it's probably best to just go ahead and kick there and see if you get the onside.

It takes about 15 sec to run the kicker out and that’s if no one’s on the ground.
You don’t want to risk that time plus kickers are set up people and usually have a routine.
A Hail Mary can be thrown 60 yards or run a trick play.
It was the smart move.
