Is it just me, or does this years transfer portal seem a lot more active this offseason with a lot of solid players entering it.

It was only a matter of time before players became more comfortable with the idea of the portal. It’ll be full on free agency within a couple more years.

Which could make it all the more entertaining and even keep the average fans involved all year round.

Eventually high school recruiting won't matter as much. The recruiting sites will start doing a transfer page with team rankings on that as well. When 5 stars on Bama and UGA and other programs aren't willing to wait their turn - other schools will jump in.

Second year of the open-entry portal and a lot more coaching upheaval than we are accustomed to

To a relative degree, sure. But actual contenders are still going to live off development of high school talent and only use the portal to plug holes. Teams that live off the portal are going to be your mid-majors, programs like Kansas St that don’t expect much beyond making a bowl game, and coaches on their last leg trying to save their jobs.

As an example, Georgia is going to talk to Gibbs and Haselwood but that doesn’t mean we will seriously pursue either (almost certainly not pursuing Zach Evans or Tank Bigsby if he enters) as it stands to affect team chemistry and alter roster numbers. Your top end teams aren’t going to automatically take the best players available from the portal just because they’re available (like they might in HS recruiting where you can get 3-4 years out of them)

Agreed. I think programs like Tennessee will try and get those players now until we can field a full roster. When you have as much turnover as we have had - we have to rely on transfers just to fill out all the spots that were lost from the Pruitt debacle. I can't wait until our program is stable enough to not need the portal to build out a roster. For now though, we can use it to our advantage.

Portal completely changed the outlook for Kentucky this season. Many thought it may be a down year and then transfers become our starting QB, WR, and LB. Portal is good for players. Without it, Will Levis would’ve never had an opportunity and Wandale Robinson would be getting beat up in the backfield at Nebraska

I was surprised to see the UGA 247 board thinking Hazelwood may be in play for Arkansas before we even heard anything about it lol

I do agree with you but there is another side to that portal that really isn't talked about all that much.

A kid with a scholly doesn't want to wait and hits the portal. He doesn't get picked up. His team says no thank you, and now there is a kid out there without a scholarship or a way to get an advanced education.

The portal giveth and taketh away.

Do the kids lose their scholarship when they enter their name in the portal? I get that it may cause some locker room issues but I feel like I’ve seen a few where the kid entered the portal but is still with the team? Maybe I’m making that up

I’d be curious how many cases there are of players not having a place to go and their current school not letting them back. Would think a coach’s reputation would tank if they did.

I'd rather take 5 or so impact transfers than a top 5 class if I'm coaching for a championship that cycle.

Depending how the NCAA governs the transfer policy going forward, I think coaches will go that route

Nearly 2700 players entered the portal last year and it looks like there will be considerably more this year, that is hard to comprehend.

It’s because Haselwood’s HS coach from Cedar Grove is at Arkansas and Rusty probably got a heads up because he knows everyone and everything about Georgia HS football, past and present.
