Understand the wanting of 2 qbs but is there serious hope that you guys will still land a guy like Rettig with Johnson already in the fold or is this a sign that Rettig wasn't happening?

I don't think Johnson's commitment has anything at all to do with Rettig.

But that's just a guess.

Fwiw, Rettig has always been considered doubtful due to the fact he'd rather stay west. I think our priority this recruiting class was Bateman, Rettig, JJ, Buchanan, and Sandberg.

Interesting...

quote:

Johnson is Auburn’s ninth commitment for the 2013 class and fifth from the state of Alabama. He plans to help Auburn sign a top-rated class in February and already has his sights set on 4-star tight end O.J. Howard from Autauga Academy in Prattville, Ala., who is currently committed to Alabama. “Hopefully I’ll come down next week to Big Cat,” he said. “Talk to receivers, tight ends. I’m most definitely going to try to get to O.J. I’ve been talking to him. I’ve been talking to him abut high school too. I’ve been trying to get him to come play with me. “That’s my main target right now, O.J. Howard.” Auburn isn’t in the market for another quarterback in this class after landing Johnson. “They’re done,” he said. “They said I’m the next quarterback and I’m the last. It feels great.”

Johnson needs to work on his drops, but he throws a good ball. He should put up crazy #'s this season.

Auburn is north of Montgomery, JJ.

Johnson is much like Zeke Pike... chock full of potential, but a project.

both dudes are projects, but Johnson's playing against AL 6A competition... much different that KY HS football, I would imagine.

wonder if JJ will enroll early... would be great for his development.

I'm certainly not disappointed in landing JJ. We've known for over a year now it was likely to happen. I think he has the tools to be an SEC QB. He's got a long ways to go and this signing isn't going to work out too well if Frazier can't seize the starting job. Basically, JJ or Pike needs to work out if Frazier comes out flat this year and I can't say for certain that will be likely.

Isn't every high school QB coming into the SEC gonna be a project?

No problem with taking Johnson, I like his potential. But I would rather us take 2 QBs

I'm still convinced that we will. I expect Clint Moseley to get processed or quit by the end of the season.

Hoke also said that he would bank on it happening (taking 2 qyarterbacks)...

I know others are saying two, but the way he is being quoted I am not sure we do go for two. Especially if he is repeating what coaches said

Kind of surprised AU took Johnson at this stage. With that being said, congrats on the pickup.

Maybe they weren't getting good news or vibes from the others left on board ahead of JJ.

I felt like AU was squarely in it for Buchanan. Now it's looking like a UF/OM battle. Not liking our chances going against OM.

I like Johnson a lot. The kid hasn't even played his Sr year of high school yet. He's got plenty of time to learn and mature physically and his potential is through the roof.

We aren't done at quarterback.

Now, if we are, I'm highly disappointed. That would mean that we pretty much gave up on higher prospects.
