Alabama has had at least one defensive lineman taken in the last three NFL Drafts. Yet despite losing elite talent at the position year after year, the Crimson Tide continue to reload at the position thanks to stellar recruiting by Nick Saban and the Alabama staff.
The defensive line will once again be a focal point for the Tide staff in the 2013 recruiting cycle, and while Alabama is still waiting to land its first defensive line commitment for the 2013 class, some of the nation's best recruits have the Tide listed among their favorites.
"I think defensive line is a top priority in every class for Alabama," said BamaOnline recruiting analyst Tim Watts. "Last year, Saban and his staff had a strong haul with an impressive finish with Korren Kirven and Dalvin Tomlinson right before national signing day. So far, no defensive linemen have committed for 2013 but Alabama is in pursuit of several of the nation's best."
The Tide's wish list for defensive line recruits reads a lot like a list of the nation's best high school players. Topping that list is the consensus choice for the nation's best player, Georgia star Robert Nkemdiche.
"Obviously the biggest name is Nkemdiche. He's the nation's top prospect and I don't think there is any debate on that issue. Alabama has been considered the favorite for a long time but LSU, Ole Miss, Clemson and Georgia are also being mentioned."
Nkemdiche (pronounced kim-DEE-chee) announced earlier this week that he will postpone his college decision until later this year, but the Crimson Tide remain firmly in the mix for his services.
Fellow five-star recruits Montravius Adams and Jonathan Allen also top the Tide's list of elite defensive line targets. While the Crimson Tide may be on the outside looking in for Adams, a Vienna, Georgia defensive tackle, Alabama appears to be in good position with Virginia-native Allen. Rated by 247Sports as the nation's top weakside defensive end, Allen publicly named the Tide his leader in February, but now calls the Tide co-leaders with Florida. He plans on announcing his decision later this month.
"Demarcus Walker and Tim Williams are two more from out of state who are looking hard at Alabama," Watts said. "Walker has UA and Florida in a dead heat currently while the Tide is battling in-state LSU for Williams signature. Both are among the top 60 prospects in the country."
In the state of Alabama, the Crimson Tide missed out on Muscle Shoals star Dee Liner, who committed early to Auburn, but is among the top three contenders for Oxford's Ulric Jones. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound defensive end currently calls Auburn his favorite but plans on visiting Alabama and Mississippi State over the summer.

It was only a few months ago when the word was he was starting off outside. Guess I'll make sure to ignore that person

Alabama recently found success in the state of New Jersey with class of 2013 commitment Anthony Averett. Now, UA coaches are returning to the Garden State for another run at a talented defensive back.

Alabama has recently picked up its recruitment for class of 2014 cornerback Jabrill Peppers, as the Crimson Tide looks to restock its secondary.

"They are showing me a lot of interest," Peppers said. "They are sending me letters, they are talking to me. They are slowly but steadily picking up their interest in me."

Although it is still early in the recruiting process, the 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback has not found one thing about Alabama he doesn't like.

"I love Alabama, you can't go wrong there," Peppers said. "That's SEC football, that's big time. I still don't know everything about them. So, as these next two years come, I'm just going to focus on finding out more about them."

The recruitment of Averett meant a lot to the New Jersey native, as many notable southern programs do not bother to recruit the state. Averett said he was happy that Alabama did not view him as an overrated Northern player like some schools have.

"I want to prove myself regardless of what anybody thinks of me," Peppers said. "I know I'm just going to work harder than everybody else. I'm my own worst critic."

Peppers watched the Alabama defense on television as it shut down LSU during the BCS National Championship game, and the defender came away from the game impressed with what he saw.

"They're a tough defense," Peppers said. "I watched them during the championship game; they are definitely the kind of defense that I like. I like their pursuit to the ball, their tackling ability; the coaches do a real good job over there."

Peppers might grow up in the Big East region, but the aggressive defensive back certainly fits the mentality of an SEC cornerback.

"If you play me at corner, I'm a tough corner," Peppers said. "I like to tackle and that is rare in a cornerback. I'm especially good off the press; I think that is my best asset. I have good make-up speed and good hips, good ball skills, but there is always room to improve."

Peppers will not be camping anywhere this summer, but did say he would like to visit Alabama in the near future.

Alabama assistant coach Lance Thompson came to Alpharetta High School in Georgia recently to look at several different prospects. One of them, three-star defensive end Naim Mustafaa, said it was good to see Thompson, despite the encounter being brief.

"That was probably our third time meeting," Mustafaa said. "He asked my coach how my family was doing and all that because he got the chance to meet my mom and my dad before."

Although Mustafaa has not received an offer from Alabama, he is interested in Alabama because of those very same family ties Thompson made it a point to ask about.

"My dad played for Nick Saban," Mustafaa said. "He always told me about him from his time with the Browns."

Alpharetta head coach Jason Dukes said that Alabama does their research and wouldn't have visited his school unless those players, like Mustafaa, had the potential to play for the Crimson Tide. Dukes described Mustafaa as a prototypical defensive end, with a great motor and great leverage. He also said Mustafaa does a great job shooting blocks of the leverage he gets. Most of all, Dukes praised his defensive lineman's attitude and drive.

"He plays the run with equal passion and veracity as the pass," Dukes said. "He's just a really, really good football player."

Mustafaa agreed with his coach about some of his strengths as a player. He said his speed is his biggest asset, as well as the fact he goes full speed all the time. Regardless, Mustafaa believes he can bring a lot to the table no matter where he plays.

"My style of play can fit into any defense," Mustafaa said. "I like to get after the quarterback. I want to rush the passer."

Mustafaa said the biggest thing he would like to improve before he makes the transition to the next level is adding bulk to his frame. He stands 6'4" but is a little undersized, weighing 235 pounds.

He said his top schools right now are Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee. Mustafaa has visited Tuscaloosa once before for Junior Day and plans to return this summer with his teammate, receiver Carlos Burse. The one thing that stood out for Mustafaa the most during his visit was the quality of Alabama's athletic facilities.

Mustafaa said he plans on making his decision during the summer, before his team begins fall practice. Regardless, an Alabama offer could shake up his list or it could not. He's not saying. Mustafaa did say, however, that he plans on visiting Tuscaloosa in the fall as well, so nothing is set in stone for the young defensive end.

"I don't know, we'll see if that happens," Mustafaa said of of an Alabama offer. "I'll probably get down to a few games with Carlos."

I just want him to be apart of the class so I can say "MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSTAFA!!!!" after he makes a sack.

Not quite. We offered him an opportunity to come throw at our camp. He can't commit until the staff sees him in person.

However, I think Bateman will commit on his visit early next month so it appears Allen is out.

FWIW, I like Allen more than Bateman.

Allen is a stud QB.

Bama is smart to at least give their name to him so to speak.

It's funny watching LSU fans name all their QBs they want and not one mention Allen. I started a thread on Allen in their recruiting section and since he wasn't a top 250 player no one cared.

After reading the LSURB, I dont think there are a whole lot of LSU fans that are very knowledgeable about recruiting. There are a few that are though. For the most part, I think recruiting is more important to our fanbase than theirs.
