BOL is back up

Three predictions for Alabama’s 2012 NFL Draft class:

First to shut up the critics
The Pick: LB Courtney Upshaw, second round (No. 35 overall), Baltimore Ravens.
Why it will happen: With fellow Alabama alum Jarret Johnson moving on to San Diego, the Ravens are in need of a starting strongside linebacker. While Upshaw played the jack position at UA, there isn't much difference between the outside spots in the 3-4, so it's not like he'll need to learn an entirely new position. There have been questions about his ability to play in coverage, but the days of SAM backers covering tight ends in the NFL are over. Instead, Upshaw will be asked to stuff the run and rush the passer, things he did extremely well in the SEC.

First to play in a Super Bowl
The Pick: LB Dont'a Hightower, first round (No. 25 overall), New England Patriots.
Why it will happen: The Patriots are the reigning AFC champs and in drafting defensive help with their first six picks of the 2012 NFL Draft, a unit that ranked 31st in the league a year ago should show signs of improvement. Projected inside starters Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes are thumpers against the run, but Hightower will bring some versatility to the table.

First to make All-Pro
The Pick: RB Trent Richardson, first round (No. 3 overall), Cleveland Browns.
Why it will happen: It won't be easy for Richardson, who will see three of the league's top seven defenses in 2011 -- Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincinnati --twice each season. But, hey, that didn't keep Peyton Hillis from rushing for 1,177 yards as the Browns feature back in 2009. Speaking of guys named Payton, Richardson's NFL career might best resemble Walter Payton's, who was named first-team All-Pro five times before playing in his lone Super Bowl in 1985.

One more while we’re at it…

Undrafted free agent most likely to make a roster
The Pick: LB Jerrell Harris, Atlanta Falcons.
Why it will happen: Harris' versatility will help his chances. He worked at the weakside and strongside linebacker spots during his time at Alabama, in addition to being an option as a coverage backer in the Crimson Tide's sub packages. For the time being, though, Harris' hopes will rest with special teams, an area where his size and speed can be put to good use.

They obviously had Coples over Cox, but I still wonder why?

Also been reported that Seahawks had Mark Barron, Bruce Irvin, & Luke Kuechly as their top 3 all with the same grade at the top

Upshaw will be a monster for B-More

Hightower will be Pats leading tackler and a leader from day 1

I wish Buccs would've signed Harris as a UDFA, tend to think he is more suited for the 43, but good UDFA pick-up for Falcons

Not gonna comment on Trent, gonna be a sad situation in Cleveland, but he will still be a great player for the Browns

Mayo has been the only one in the middle, stuff gets forced to the inside and he is nowhere NEAR the leader Donte is, DH is also a better tackler, they traded up to get him to be the leader and he will be a dominant LB, gonna make people forget Mayo

Meh. I still think Mayo will be the leading tackler, but that's JMO. The Pats LB core is ridiculous now with the addition of Hightower.

Name:Denzel Devall
Position: Inside Linebacker
247Sports Ranking:111th Overall, 5th ILB, 3rd in the state of Louisiana
High School:Bastrop(Bastrop, La.)
Recruited by:Mike Groh

What have you been up to since signing day?
“Basically, track practice and working out and running, that’s about it. I throw discus and shot put in track.”

What are your thoughts on the Alabama strength and conditioning program?
“It started out pretty tough and pretty hard, but it’s starting to get easier. I am still not ready for the running part, but I am getting there. I should be ready by the time I get down there.”

What is your current height and weight?
“Right now, I am 248 lbs. and I am 6’2.”

Are you trying to add/lose any weight before you get on campus?
“Lose some…I’d like to be at least 240.”

When are you reporting to campus?
“On the 27th(of May).”

Do you know who your roommates will be yet?
“All I know is me, Landon (Collins) and Geno(Smith).”

Other than football, is there anything that you are looking forward to doing once you arrive on campus?
“No, not really. I don’t really do much. I just like to stay at my home or watch a movie or bowl. I don’t do too much going out and stuff.”

Have you chosen a major yet?
“I am torn between business and biology.”

Do you know what number you will be wearing next year?
"No, not yet."

Are there any players that you model your playing style after?
“Whenever I am in the middle, I like to think of myself as Patrick Willis. If I am on the edge, I like to see myself as like Julius Peppers.”

Have you and the coaches discussed which Linebacker spot you will be working at this fall?
“Coach Saban told me when I was at the spring game that I would be starting out at Mike, see how I handled it and go from there.”

Do you have a preference on position?
“No, not at all.”

With all of the turnover at the Linebacker position, What are your expectations going into your freshman year at the Capstone?
“It’s anybody’s game. Just got to go over there and train to the best of your ability and compete. It’s all about competing. Once you learn the playbook, then the hardest part is over… it’s just the physical part then. I am pretty good at picking up playbooks and playing pretty physical.”

What are your thoughts on A-Day?
“It was real nice. It showed me a lot of things…it just showed that it’s an open ball game and you got to go in there and give it your best and compete.”

What about Alabama made it the right place for you?
“Well, it was just Coach Saban was there and I have always wanted to be coached and play for him. It’s just their production and the player’s production in winning championships and everything. It’s just a winning atmosphere and an atmosphere that I want to be a part of…so I chose Alabama.

Being a Louisiana native, What has the attitude of your friends and classmates been like since you committed to the Tide?
“Oh man, I get it every day. They are not Alabama fans, but they are near bama fans, so they say they will support me every game until we play LSU. I can respect that.”

What was it like to go to school after Alabama Dominated LSU in the BCS National Championship Game?
“Man, it was lovely. I actually got sent home because I had on my Bama pullover.”

Do you want to be active in recruiting more Louisiana guys to come to the University of Alabama?
“Oh yeah, most definitely. It’s a big thing for me."

What are your thoughts about this past weekend’s NFL Draft?
“It was great. I believe we had more guys go than any other school. It just shows that we produce NFL players and players who are ready to play.”

What is your favorite food?
“I don’t have a favorite food. I’ll eat pretty much anything.”

Do you have a favorite movie?
“I like scary movies…I can’t pick just one.”

Do you have a favorite video game?
“I don’t really play video games.”

Do you have a dream car?
“I’ve seen one of those Denali pick-up trucks. I want one so bad.

If he's good enough, I'm sure Saban can get him one lined up.

Tide football commit Anthony Averett among the top track athletes in the nation

With a four-star rating from most football recruiting services, New Jersey star Anthony Averett is among the nation's top football recruits.

This week at the Penn Relays, the Alabama Crimson Tide commitment is also cementing his status as one of the nation's top track and field athletes.

Averett is regarded by many as the nation's top long jumper at the high school level, and further earned that title over the weekend by placing second overall in the long jump at the Penn Relays, the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. The event regularly attracts thousands of athletes from around the world.

Averett's jump of 24 feet and 1/4 inch placed him second behind only Jamaican jumper Clive Pullen and earned the New Jersey native a prestigious gold watch, the award traditionally given to both the winner and the top American finisher at each event at the Penn Relays.

The jump comes just a little over a week after Averett wowed the track world with a jump of 25 feet-2 1/2 inches at the Woodbury Relays in New Jersey, the top long jump in the nation this year and the second longest in state history. The only person to post a longer jump than Averett in New Jersey state history? Carl Lewis, the undisputed king of the long jump.

So we basically replaced one of the top prep hurdlers (Artie Burns) in the country with one of the top prep long jumpers (Averett) in the country. I wonder if Averett got an invite to The Opening. I imagine he would do quite well with his athleticism.

I also wouldn't be surprised if FSU made a run at Averett. They've been successful at selling dual-sport recruits on playing multiple sports at FSU.

I realize he is just sticking up for one of his former player, but anyone who objectively watched the Kent State game last season could tell you that Sims wasn't ready. AJ made some mistakes too, but he was playing with a little confidence. Sims just looked like the game was moving too fast for him. Which would have been fine if we were playing a good team. But we were playing Kent State.

Yeah, I understand him thinking his guy is the best but the whole in state vs out of state excuse is laughable to me for a couple reasons:

1. From what I saw, Bama fans were split pretty evenly between McCarron and Sims going into last season. Even though Sims was from out of state, many fans were absolutely convinced he was better than AJ because he was rated higher in high school. Plus, there was some cooling of the AJ love following his performance in the '10 Iron Bowl and '11 A-day.

2. There probably are some head coaches out there who are influenced by who the fans want to play QB, but CNS is definitely not one of them. He doesn't give a f*** who the fans or media think should be starting and since he's not from Alabama he would not be personally biased toward an in state player.

But hey, whatever helps Sims' high school coach sleep at night.

Saban was asked about Justin Taylor after the golf tournament today:

“I don’t think I should even be commenting on that because these guys … we’re not supposed to comment about these recruits unless they’re coming to our place,” Saban said.

“But you know, we made a rule in the SEC that you can’t oversign. We had an injured player [Taylor] who agreed to start school in January and then changed his mind. And then we were full. What else could we do?

“But it’s good that you all created such a tremendous story about all of this. My honesty and integrity about the kids has always been straight up and up front. We never get rid of any kids. We made an agreement, and the guy [Taylor] changed his mind. He got to do what he wanted to do, and we’re disappointed he’s not coming to our place.”

LINK

When JT initially agreed to greyshirt (and not sign an LOI), we filled that spot. He changed his mind about greyshirting but at that point it was too late. I think the implication is that if JT had said no to the greyshirt proposal right off the bat then his commitment would've still been honored and he would've signed an LOI and enrolled in the summer. The little we know about the Philon situation doesn't really seem to support that interpretation though.
