Lots of talk of upset coming from Michigan players. I don't remember a peep from Alabama players when we were a big underdog against Clemson in a similar type matchup.

Clemson wasn't defending anything. Bama is defending NC's. There is a huge difference.

Not really all that similar. Bama was the better team then, Clemson was just incredibly overrated as usual.

I still hate that the best video footage of Javy's punt return against LSU in 2007 was a video camera on the sideline. Where's the CBS footage on that? I was at the game so I never got to see a replay, other than that one.

But that's hindsight. The 2008 Chick-fil-A Kick-Off was one of the first major renewals of the kick-off type games. Clemson was hyped up. Alabama was only talked about because of an insane recruiting class.

They lost back-to-back games to the state of Alabama, too.

ne of the better value three-star prospects in the southeast is arguably Lithonia (Ga.)’s David Johnson.

David Johnson notched 81 tackles and three sacks as a junior.

Johnson, a 6-1 ½, 254-pound linebacker/defensive end, has repeatedly abused opposing offensive tackles at the MVP Camp Atlanta and, most recently, Saturday’s NFTC in Atlanta.

Strong but quick, Johnson best profiles as a hybrid niche player in certain defensive schemes. But his spring circuit dominance figures to attract greater interest throughout the spring.

“I’m not going to turn away any school that gives me an offer,” he said. “If you give me an offer, there’s a chance I’ll go there.”

Perhaps, but the odds appear to favor specific schools already.

Johnson continues to cite a top three of Auburn, South Carolina and Vanderbilt, in no order.

Alabama, though, seems to have heightened its interest recently, and Johnson spoke again with his recruiter, defensive ends coach Chris Rumph, late last week.

“I think they’re real close to offering,” he said. “They said they really like me and will come out to my spring practice. We had been talking before, but coach Rumph said they had been watching my film and they really liked me. Then they saw what I did in the MVP Camp and wanted to talk to me this spring.

“They play a 3-4, so I could be a walk-up defensive end or linebacker for them. They haven’t offered me yet, but Alabama, they’re up there.”

Johnson carries an 89 rating from 247Sports as a high three-star prospect and is ranked as the state of Georgia's No. 34 prospect.

He hasn’t been to Alabama since last summer, but he was there twice during that span and said he was impressed by both trips.

“They’re real structured,” he said. “I like the size of their facilities, and they keep their players under a real close watch with nutrition and weight plans.”

Seven schools have told Johnson they plan to scout him this spring: Alabama, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Auburn, LSU, Clemson and Ole Miss.

He doesn’t have any visits yet planned for the summer. But it sounds as if both South Carolina and Auburn have staying power.

In particular, the Gamecocks have signed a player from Lithonia each of the last two cycles – redshirt freshman linebacker Cedrick Cooper and 2012 offensive lineman Joe Harris.

“I used to spend a lot more time with Cedrick, but now I see Joe a lot more,” Johnson said. “They want me to go to South Carolina. They have some of my favorite players. I was a real big fan of Alshon Jeffrey and Melvin Ingram. Marcus Lattimore, too.

“Auburn, they produced Cam Newton, and I used to shoot basketball with him back in middle school when he was playing in high school at Westlake. And they have a few of my friends up there.”

“I’m not near a decision just yet. It will probably be at the end of the summer, and if not then, at the end of my senior season.”

From Charles Power on Cooper Bateman:

quote:

I wouldn't list him as a long shot since he said he's "definitely" planning on coming back. I'd say his top group looks something like UA, Florida, Washington, and Utah.

AU not on the list? I would need to see a quote or something to believe that.

It's Charles' opinion, not Bateman's official top group. However it seems to be another Bama-UF battle IMO but he doesn't really talk much about his leaders so he really could end up anywhere.

I just don't see it as a Bama/UF battle. I think the top 3 is AU, UF, and Bama. I don't know the order, but that's JMO.

Could be. I haven't heard what he's said about AU but he does speak highly about UA and UF.
