Insert smile, "LSU puts out D Linemen 24/7, LSU plays crazy defense and that is how we play it".

The fact that RN will grow into a 300 pounder doesn't need to be brought up on the LSURB, that doesn't fit the propaganda machine of "he's a much better fit in a 4-3" What they fail to realize is that montgomery and mingo will be the first 2 3-4 outside linebackers drafted
3-4 is the tits

Sam Montgomery will play with his hand on the ground in the NFL.
Mingo is almost an outlier because he has such a quick first step AND great straight line speed, and size-wise he's a true tweener. I'm not sure he's going to get any zone responsibilities in a 3-4 so while he "may" play standing up on Sundays, he's going to be primarily a pass rusher at that level (and he has improved his run defense from his early, wild days). If he's drafted into a 3-4 defense - he'll lose a little weight and focus on maintaining quickness - if he ends up on a 4-3 defense, he'll gain weight and focus on getting stronger.

IF you can get the guys to run it correctly.

I have to disagree here, there are guys a lot bigger than montgomery playing OLB in the 3-4. Most of the NFL's 3-4 schemes have one guy that is primarily a pass rusher anyway and plays with his hand in the dirt 50% of the time. Montgomery can be that guy. Both he and mingo will need to add a lot of bulk if they want to be an every down 4-3 DE in the NFL because offensive tackles will laugh at a guy weighing 250-260 trying to stop the run. If they end up in a 4-3 defense (highly unlikely IMO) then they will be situational players, and you don't draft a guy in the first round to play on 3rd downs. Clowney is another guy that will end up standing up once he gets to the NFL. While they are athletic freaks they just don't have the bulk to beat a grown man blowing off the ball on a running play.

I don't see the point in predicting whether or not a guy like Montgomery or Clowney will stand up at the next level or continue playing with their hand in the dirt. A lot of it depends on what team drafts them. Robert Ayers, former Tennessee defensive end, was drafted by the Broncos as a 34 outside linebacker, and now that we have changed back to a 43 defense he's a defensive end.

The only position that is really hard to recruit a quality guy at in every cycle is noseguard. The 3-4 needs a good one or it doesn't work.
Hell, louisiana produces a slew of guys that fit the 3-4 to a T. Williams, Beckwith and Melvin Jones in this cycle could all be great linebackers in the system and Devall last year.

That's kind of the point I was trying to make. I think a 4-3 team would bypass either for another need. All 3 are great pass rushers and suspect against the run. Robert Ayers is a big breakfast away from 280 pounds and built differently than the 3 mentioned

Both are going to go 1st round barring injury. NFL scouts must really like situational players.

Bone said Alabama leads followed by Clemson. Expects him to commit to Alabama before senior season.
