This is the difference I think. I have nothing against people who root for schools they didn't attend but I take pride in more than just the sports teams at A&M. Fundraising efforts, new buildings on campus, alumni being named or elected to positions of power, etc.

There's a difference. I don't discount so-called tshirt fans. But there's a difference between a die-hard alum and a die-hard sidewalk fan.

Now I'd still rather have sidewalk fans vs alums who don't care about sports at all. I think its rare to find those people, though. Even the nerdiest, most intellectual people who went to your school will generally at least take a passing interest in its sports teams, just because they attended at least a few games as a student and have fond memories.

Agreed. I have just as much, if not more, interest in what LSU is doing with its academic facilities as I do with its athletic facilities.

We've got a ton of non-alumni fans, obviously, and some of them are big time donors to TAF. But their money usually ends there. If I find myself with a ton of money one day, athletics will be a good ways down the line when it comes to donations to LSU, with the first being a new library.

I grew up in Fayetteville and since FHS is on campus nearly all of my graduating class attended the U of A. Some of us had to leave state for our degrees because they aren't offered in Arkansas. However, I couldn't imagine being anything but a Hog fan. And I have friends that went to FHS, graduated from the U of A, and hate everything Razorback sports related. It stems from high school days and parking problems and sports shutting down the town. I don't understand, it's just what you deal with when associated with a power program. But I think the U of A appreciates me buying tickets and t-shirts and what not versus my friends that wouldn't be caught dead with a Razorback on their clothes even though they are alumni.

FWIW I at least took classes at the U of A in the summer. Got that transcript!

Same here. I care about the campus, the town, the place, etc, all as much or more than I do the sports teams.

Zero conflicts here.

On a Hallowed hill in Tennessee
Like Beacon shining bright
The stately walls of old UT
Rise glorious to the sight.

So here's to you old Tennessee,
Our Alma Mater true
We pledge in love and harmony
Our loyalty to you.

Nuff Said.

In terms of my loyalty, I don't in any way distinguish between Texas A&M on the athletics field and Texas A&M in the classroom and community. When the 12th Man Foundatation receives my annual pledge, so too does the Association of Former Students.

It's a collective effort. It's also the reason why I've always said "we" (rather than "they") when referring to the Aggie teams. People on this board have questioned that (use of "we"), which I found to be interesting, since I've never come across that before. I'm starting to learn that it may have to do w the fact that so many fans of SEC schools didn't attend the schools for which they root. That wasn't nearly as much the case in the B12.

Interesting topic.

Grew up in Kansas a die-hard KU fan. Lots of my family went there and it's all I knew...we moved to SWMO ( ) for my dad's job. Unfortunately KU doesn't give out in-state tuition to out of state students easily and Arkansas does. Would've been about double the price so here I am in Fayetteville

You've clearly never set foot in the state of Texas.
