Just drove to Houston and back two weekends ago. On the way back I went thru Texarkana and drove up thru Arkansas for a more scenic route. The moment I crossed into Arkansas, it smelled like rotten eggs for about 170 miles until I got to Fort Smith. From Fort Smith to the Missouri it was pleasant driving.

But fricks sake...can y'all just destroy southern Arkansas? Its the arse crack of the country.

Truth.

I'm sure if you have a massive house in West U or River Oaks it would be fine. Dallas and Houston are more similar than people realize. I'd much rather live in Houston or DFW than most rust belt cities.

Forgot about San Antonio. I agree...SA is almost equal to Austin, in my opinion. Great city.

Having spent part of my life living in Texas and part going there all the damned time, I can give you an outsider's view of Houston vs Dallas.

Houston: Nice to be close to the coast for fishing and stuff. Actually has tall trees (which you pay the price for in ridiculous humidity).

Dallas: More polished, more cohesive "good areas". Lots of different burbs to choose from, and most of them are close-in compared to Houston's burbs.

I'd take Dallas over Houston, personally. But there is good and bad in both.

"polished, more cohesive good areas" are a result of a city not being stupid and having zoning. Within the actual city, the young Aggies I know live in Midtown, which is the shittiest nice area I have ever seen, and around Washington, which is the second shittiest nice area I have ever seen. I have a wealthy friend whose oil executive father lives in a really nice town home near the galleria, and the streets have no u-turn signs at night because of the prostitues and crack heads. Ridiculous.

Dallas suburbs are way nicer too, imo. The Woodlands roads are stupid.

I like the Mizzou folks, which I thought I would in the first place, reason I was glad they joined, still think they will fit right in after a lil bit

A&M were losers in the 60's 70's 80's 90's 00's and 10's

nothing has changed there

Other than the average BMI in Houston being a little bit higher, the people are almost identical. Rust belt cities are meh too. I've always heard they have the most history and culture, but New Orleans trumps in and all cities in the country in both of those.

I can't speak for the weather, because the only time I've been there was for the Texas Bowl when we got stomped by Navy, so the weather felt quite nice compared to the mid-west winter. I was very unimpressed by Houston, though.

You've been there once.

Houston isn't the tourist friendliest town, I'll admit, but it has plenty of nice stuff and places to go if you know where to go. Lots of money in H-Town. Can't help but have nice shite.

I've been to St. Louis a few times. Been up the Arch. Strolled around downtown. Saw the National Bowling Museum and Stan Musial's statue. I wasn't that impressed relative to Houston. Should I make a judgment on St. Louis based on a few brief visits?

Precipitation Map of Texas

The rainfall seems to increase almost linear from West Texas to East Texas and therefore the humidity as well. I would imagine LA would be a sweltering steam pot in a lot of areas too.

I can tell you that Dallas fans/residents always gave me shite before I moved up here like Houston was this humid jungle and Dallas was perfect, let me tell you that is fricking bullshite.

It does not rain up here, it storms. There is lightning, hail, or wind, or all 3 together, at least 90% of the time. Throw in tornados and snow/ice/people who can't handle either and you have mother natures perfect torture chamber.

Seriously, it is also just as hot up here, so really the only thing they have over us is the humidity. You can say hurricanes but at least we can move out of the way of those things, you can't dodge tornadoes throwing semi trailers at you.

Tornados seemed to hit B/CS a lot when I lived there I always seemed to be within a mile or so of where the wind hit hardest. I remember they knocked out a lot of the Doux Chene apartments when I lived near Longmire back around 2007.

It definitely thunderstorms, but the combined annual rainfall is far less than Houston, so the amount of time you have gross overcast and obnoxious groggy days may be 10% of that of Houston.

And the only thing Dallas has over you is the humidity? How in the world can you diminish that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidity

In the wikipedia article on humidity, the one for the entire world... THERE IS AN ENTIRE PARAGRAPH DEVOTED TO HOUSTON.

quote:

The highest dew points in the US are found in coastal Florida and Texas. When comparing Key West and Houston, two of the most humid cities from those states, coastal Florida seems to have the higher dew points on average. However, Houston lacks the coastal breeze present in Key West, and, as a much larger city, it suffers from the urban heat island effect.[9] A dew point of 86 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded in southern Minnesota on July 23, 2005, though dew points over 80 degrees Fahrenheit are rare there.[10] The US city with the lowest annual humidity is Las Vegas, Nevada, averaging 39% for a high and 21% as a low.[11]

Holy shite this thread has become boring. How about a change of subject. Bermuda triangle? Did Atlantis truly exist? Are there multiple and/or parallel universes?

Probably, St. Louis is not all that nice.
Some of the areas out west are nice, albeit somewhat boring.

Mizzou and A&M fans are both psyched to be joining the SEC, and I've been impressed how the MU athletic dept has stepped up all phases of their game to meet the challenge of the SEC. As a Mizzou fan, I'll review A&M. With such a huge fan base, number of great TX players to recruit, and enrollment, I think A&M will be a great addition to the SEC. I attended a game at Kyle Field (and yell practice the night before) years ago and was blown away by the fan participation and deep sense of tradition. I have nothing but respect for A&M and wish them luck in the coming years. I have no doubts that their football program will continue to improve....

I'm excited about the A&M fans joinging the SEC, I think they'll fit in way better than everyone is giving them credit for.

Mizzou is slightly different. I get the impression the cardinals are a MUCH bigger deal to Missouri folks than Mizzou football. And if your entire state doesn't f-ing love CFB more than all other sports, I don't know how well you're gonna fit in. Its kinda our thing down here.

A Louisiana kid, but a fan of Alabama... you have 2 professional teams between those two locations. I mean, when your state has 2 MLB teams, 2 NFL teams, and one team, the Cardinals, has more championships than even the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide(gumps only have 9), you aren't really comparing apples to apples.

Someone could be a diehard tshirt sip, but I wouldn't know for hours because we could talk about the greatest sports franchise in the history of the world, The Dallas Cowboys, before it ever got brought up. It is just what happens when you grow up around professional sports teams that are successful.
