I'm very much a proponent of using end of year rankings when comparing wins. There is something to beating someone in season with a high ranking, but that may not mean much: See "Top 10 Texas" who finished 8-5 and #25 only by the skin of their teeth.

That doesn't say much about being the greatest team. It just says you played a slightly tougher schedule.
2018 Clemson was a better team than 2019 LSU.

Meanwhile LSU barely beat an injury filled 11-2 Alabama team by only 5 points.
You have to go all the way back to 1957 when Alabama has it's worst coach ever, Ears Whitworth for LSU to match a 28 point margin of victory(28-0). Alabama managed 2 wins that season. Bear was hired the next season.
