Meh, I'm more stalking the Gruden threads that you are as well. The only difference is I'm using more than three keys in the message box.

Pretty sure no one can argue with this.
Ya, there is no way he is a downgrade for the vols. I just personally think it might take him a year MAYBE two to get adjusted to running an entire FB program as opposed to being the NFL with a personnel director, GM, etc. I think when/if he does get adjusted and figures everything out, he would make the vols a big contender comming out of the east year in and year out.

Solid. Agreed.

He could very likely be the next Bill Callahan.

The thing about Gruden is he wants that control - that's why you would never see him resurface somewhere like the Cowboys or anyone with an owner that thinks too highly of themselves. That's likely a main part of the interest in Gruden taking a college job.

Except he's a significantly better coach than Bill Callahan.

Because Callahan took Gruden's oakland team to the super bowl when Gruden couldn't?

So Gruden took two teams in the same year to the Super Bowl? Even more impressive imo.

Just curious why it matters when asking the question if he'd be a successful "SEC" coach. Why not just ask if he'd be a successful college coach? Whats the difference? I know you guys think SEC coaches are put on short leashes but the same can be said for coaches in most elite conferences across America. Think about where most of these great SEC coaches originated from? BIG 10 and BIG 12 country.

Gruden could be fine or he could be a dud. Odds are, he isn't going to be what Tennessee fans expect.
The difference between Callahan and Gruden is essentially one win. Saying Gruden beat Callahan while at tampa means gruden>callahan is an oversimplification of tFlagship-level proportions.
All you can say is Gruden did more at Tampa than Dungy and Callahan did more at Oakland than Gruden.

Isn't it telling enough that no one wants Gruden in the NFL? I mean he could do well in college. No one really knows either way.
I'm biased because he fricked up my bucs.

Did he inherit a good team in Oakland?

Gruden's coaching is similar to Charlie Weis. Both are great when they can coach smart veterans but have a lot of trouble teaching and developing young players. The Raiders teams Gruden won with were veteran-laden teams. They had Rich Gannon, Charlie Garner, Tim Brown, and Jerry Rice among others. Everybody knows about all the veteran players on Gruden's Super Bowl winning team in '02 with Tampa. Gruden's never developed a young QB. He's never won with a good, young team. I have a lot of doubts about his coaching style being effective in college. But it's worth the risk. The college coaching market is thin. I don't see any Brian Kellys out there right now.
