So are we just talking about the worst coach in modern college football history, or are we talking about the worst on-paper hires at the time that they were made? Because honestly, the two worst on-paper hires I can think of both ended up working out pretty well before ultimately, and predictably, tanking. They are:

Ed Orgeron, LSU - He had one of the worst coaching records in SEC history at Ole Miss and also managed to land them on NCAA probation in the process, and yet LSU for some reason decided he was the man for their job after firing Miles, who sported one the best coaching records in the country. A complete head-scratcher of a hire.

Gene Chizik, Auburn - He had an all-time losing record as a head coach when Auburn hired him, which of course brought on the famous, "We want a winner, not a loser" catcalls as he got off the plane in Auburn for the first time. A very, very uninspiring hire for a program trying desperately to compete with the machine Saban was starting to build across the state.

Of course, when you give each of these guys one of the best SEC players of all time, not even they could screw that up.

Chizik was a complete head scratcher for sure. Orgeron was the cheap answer.

If you go back and look at Jimbos record, it wasn't terrible. He was a victim of that contract and Saban. No one really competed with Saban. Jimbo could have done better at tampering expectations.

Shula doesn't belong in this group

It was ugly but he won 10 games in 05 after taking over a disaster of a hire in Mike Price

Not even close to chad Morris

Agreed, Shula did the best you could do considering the situations and all the injuries he dealt with, also who else was Bama going to hire 3 months before the season after the Price fiasco. Shula was a Band-Aid and never considered to be a long term play.

Guy had a team that would have spanked #1 ND in a 4 team playoff, beat Ohio State in the Gator bowl (right after the Urban to OSU announcement), landed classes that carried the 2015/16 seasons, and still was over .500 in 3 out of 4 seasons.

Don’t EVER say Billy was better than William Muschamp.

Billy hasn't lost to an FCS team (yet).

TSRH ^^
At least most of the bad coaches listed didn't struggle with getting the coin toss right, smdh.

Jimbo was the worst return on investment, Charlie was decent at recruiting, bad at everything else.
