Not sure if there is a buyout?
The school gave McDonnell a 10-year extension on his existing contract and will pay him $1 million in base salary. The contract also includes several retention bonuses, including a $150,000 payment if McDonnell stays at U of L through next summer. He will receive another $150,000 bonus if he's still at U of L in 2020, and then the bonus drops to $100,000 every two years after that, beginning in 2022 and running through 2026.
McDonnell, who took the U of L job in 2007, has guided the Cardinals to three College World Series and has them in position to return to college baseball's championship this year, with the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. He's collected a 453-189 record over the past nine-plus seasons, including nine NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the super regionals.
The announcement comes as McDonnell's name popped up as a potential candidate for the job openings at Alabama and Texas, two powerhouse programs. McDonnell told reporters Tuesday that he had no spoken to anyone about the Texas job, but U of L athletics director Tom Jurich said Monday that he expected other schools to pursue his coach and would "go down fighting" to keep McDonnell at Louisville.

I don't think Miss State could pry him away from TCU...he has a good thing going. Maybe Cliff Gustafson...a real college baseball stud...even at 87...bring him out of retirement.

Kentucky's coach, just for the hilarious melt it will produce.

Cohen ought to throw a feeler out to O'Conner at UVA - he took that program from nothing to a national title.
I'm hoping LSU goes after someone like that once PM hangs it up.

Mingione has no real ties to Kentucky. He's from New York, grew up and went to Embry-Riddle in Florida, and has coached in MS, KY, FL, and NC. Given the resources State has compared to Kentucky, I'm sure he'd jump at the job too, although Kentucky is building a brand new baseball stadium currently.
His ties is he was an assistant under Cohen at Kentucky. Nick said once again during the Motivational Monday segment on Kentucky Sports Radio that “it’s not happening”. Said he can build a program of his own in Lexington.
And I will add that I am laughing at a certain poster and glad to see that I am living rent free in his head....in 5...4....3....

No employed coach has ever said " yeah, after this season I am out of here for more money and to greener pastures"
He may or may not even be on the short list but I expect Cohen to make it hard for his choice to turn down his offer in the end, we will just have to wait and see.

We will see...but Nick seems to be a loyal person. I think he’s staying. We never thought Cohen was staying when State came calling.

I highly doubt he knows you well enough to have personally given you much of an impression either way, you are hoping, just like all the folks were when Florida came a calling for Mullen.

Everybody and their mother knew Cohen was simply doing OJT in Lexington.
The odds are exponentially greater of winning a Championship south of I40 for some reason, in fact the the odds increase the futher South you go, y'all Yankees are screwed.

I think it is awesome we have a baseball coach that State thinks they can steal. Nick must be the real deal.

If Eastern Carolina can win it...then Nick can do it in Lexington.

Never implied we would attempt to, in fact I think I was pretty clear on that.
My personal opinion that is that Nick is a good ways down the list but who knows, the fact he was not really considered last time around speaks volumes.
I am fairly confident we are shooting for more established coaches, but again, we will see.

MSU should hire Will Clark as head coach. He can bring in Palmeiro to be the hitting coach/ Asst head coach.
Will Clark pressers would be unbearable

How much does McDonnell still love Louisville, now that Jurich is gone?
