Due to the lack of "splash" in their initial year in the SEC does OU run the risk being seen in the same light as Mizzou. Like Mizzou, geographically and to some extent culturally, they aren't really a natural fit in the SEC. Yes they have a strong lineage, but it's not a Southern lineage. One has to wonder if given few more years of mediocrity they could become one of the more obscure teams in the super conference.
Oklahoma is far more southern than Missouri which is firmly midwestern.
We are essentially Texas culturally except maybe the far northern part. Eastern Oklahoma is essentially east Texas and western Oklahoma is esentially west Texas.
I am guessing you are one of those who thinks Oklahoma is midwest. I never once heard anyone put Oklahoma in the midwest until I moved away from Oklahoma. DFW is less than an hour from the border.
And we're not Missouri when it comes to football. Never have been and never will be. We have the DFW area in our back yard. We literally entered the SEC with a receiving corp that was missing its top 6 guys, a new QB who was highly touted but turned out to be terrible in real game time situations, and a very bad line. Nevertheless, it took some major f' ups by that same QB for Missouri to beat us at home.
I don't know how OU will be this year but I do know year in and out we'll be far better than we were last year.

You mean like do what Mizzou did in our 2nd year in the SEC and go 12-2 & beat Georgia?
I doubt they can accomplish what we did that early but maybe they can ascribe to!

I thought OU would be fine but look at their recruiting class this year....that's not a good sign.

In all honesty it's cultural. No one and I mean absolute no one thinks of The South and Mizzou or OU. It's that simple. You 2 are cultural misfits. Not an insult. Just a fact.

This. You know how I know Escape from New York was filmed in East St. Louis. You can tell by the OU graffiti.

It's irrelevant. No one would state Georgia isn't a fit in the SEC. It's a matter of geography and culture as I pointed out in the OP.

What?
No one on the face of the earth associates Missouri or Oklahoma with the South either geographically or culturally to include the citizens of either state. Why? Because your not. You both may have your own culture, but it's not "Southern." You don't have the heritage the rest of us have and I don't know if you ever will. Again, it's not an insult; just a factual observation.

Your username is a perfect example of just what I'm speaking of. No citizen of the South would ever conceive of claiming anything from Southern Cal much less branding themself with it. We just wouldn't. It would be considered "taboo" and probably get you ostracized from your immediate family, however you probably never even gave it a second thought. You just don't have "it' in your genetic heritage and if you can't obtain "it" through winning football then there is no hope for OU to become relevant. If there's one thing that binds all the SEC together it's our love of football. You don't have the geography, culture, heritage or history so lose and you will quickly become an irrelevant afterthought of a team in this league because in truth winning is the only thing that can make you relevant.

If you think Missouri is firmly midwestern you don’t know Missouri history and culture. Missouri south of Interstate 70 is culturally very southern. Most of those who settled in southeastern Missouri they came from the Carolinas. Large parts of Missouri is Mississippi…they speak like they are from Mississippi. There is almost none of Missouri that is midwestern. KC is more western and /or Great Plains.

If you go to the user search of this website and pretty much type any state or major US city, you’ll see that many posters of an SEC fanhood claim them.
Seattle dawg
Los Angeles Tiger
Boston Dawg
List goes on.

Venables is in a make or break it year, and probably a dead man walking. OU recruited top 5-8 until this year.

In an incredibly feeble SEC east those years where the West was unquestionably the king daddy of the conference and pretty much any SEC west team could have won the east.
Since the beginning of the division era in the SEC please list the years in which a division had two teams finish the season inside the top 5. We'll hang up and listen Moo state fan.

Yeah - if only we played better teams…OU and A&M are straight dog water. Why the hell do we even bother playing them?

Errr, I'm not sure that helps your argument, but it's dang sure something I would ever tout, even if it is true.

Yep. At least half of southerns consider anything west of Louisiana enemy territory and the other half are one the fence.

I hope you are. I want to see you succeed. It's good for the conference. I meant no insult by anything I said. I was simply wondering given the lack of southern heritage the rest of the Conference has (minus Texas and Mizzou) if you don't win soon does OU become an obscure SEC team. To put it in context Mizzou has won since they've been in the SEC but are still looked at as a misfit to a large degree.

Someone has to pad your W/L record. How else would you have ever made it to the SECCG?

Meh.
Oklahoma isn't "cowboy' land. You're just kind of what was left over after everything else was partitioned.
Lots of dust and dirt.
