Cuts in both Higher Ed and Healthcare are required if there's a revenue shortfall during the current FY (unless Jindal calls a special legislative session)
Any department can be cut in the future
I honestly can't elaborate that much on Louisiana politics; mainly because it's a colossal shite show

Actually we have a thread on our board about how shitty it is that cuts must come from education in Louisiana. It sucks. Y'all have a good school and I hate to see any good school get squeezed financially

Well we're ahead of schools like UNC and Ohio State for mid-career salaries, so as long as you aren't an idiot and major in a worthless degree, you should leave LSU with a good job in a great field of work

Doesn't mean anything for athletics, as LSU Athletics actually can assist the University in that regard.
Temporary crisis for the University. It may be sticky for awhile but LSU and Louisiana have come back from much worse.....Jindal is a puppet.
And there are many universities in this nation with a similar dilemma....

LSU has a good engineering school and engineers make money. Not journalism, english, or liberal arts majors.

Bobby Jindal is an arse. I'll voting democrat next election and that will be a first

Situation sounds dire. This is a true #tdecline.

If you think the Dem is the better candidate by all means, but maybe people in Louisiana should finally listen to a candidate's plan to help the state and not adhere to party politics. Just an idea but voting Democrat just to spite a man who doesn't care or vise versa seems pointless. Although as I post this I realize it's been this way for a long time and people are stubborn. That said the #incline is real.

LSU athletics doesn't take state funds.

And of course, Louisiana's constitution only allows cuts in healthcare and education

My Engineering professor just got back from some academic boards meeting in Alexandrea, and he said he didn't think it was possible to be less optimistic about the Current state of Louisiana public education. But somehow he managed to come back more concerned

IMO, those are severe cuts for the BR campus.

Sure they're severe cuts, but LSU isn't going to gut the programs that write the checks

quote:I know the OP's intent was to throw doubt towards LSU athletics. But I think this is more about LSU System as a whole, athletics is a small portion of the LSU educational system. This write-up makes it sound like some drastic measures may be taken very shortly that could impact an awful lot of people. Don't you think budget cuts of that magnitude will have an affect on the whole state of LA?

In the end the cut won't be as large as they are estimating. Yes we currently run at a deficit but the state government will piecemeal the budget using reserve funds and other quick fix means so this falls on the next governor. The engineering and business colleges are mainly run using private funding just an FYI. This song and dance has been going on for a while. AS STATED PREVIOUSLY, the athletic department gives back a majority of their surplus to the academic side of the university. So the department won't be "rolling in dough" while the campus suffers.
Edit: Private funding refers to companies along "Cancer Alley", such as Shell and BASF, partially funding the universities' engineering departments. They do not do it single handedly, but those departments aren't solely dependent on the university.

LSU's AD gives to the university. Not always the case with universities. Sure, it's terrible for the school but the OP was taking the athletics angle.
