I think this will be Saban's weakest team in recent memory. Hurts just isn't impressive to me when I watch him. I just think he is a lackluster QB with great running ability. With a year of tape, teams should be able to matchup with him a little better. They're losing quite a bit on D, but they are still a top 15 D imo.
I actually think it might be our best team since 2012. Guess we'll all find out shortly.

Well they average beating the SEC teams they played 24.88 points a game last year, I think
it will be more like 28 points a game this year... Y'all need to step it up.

If Hurts hasn't significantly improved, then Tagovailoa will replaced him.
The defense will be the best in the league, again.

No, he really wasn't.
When you break down the numbers, he was pretty bad as a passer.
In 14 starts he averaged
190 yards a game and 1.5 passing touchdowns.
66 yards rushing and .73 touchdowns a game
The last three games of the season he was
31-65 47.7% for 326 yards and 2 TDs
Hurts fumbled the most of any player in the country with 11, lucky for him only five were recovered by the defense. He also had 9 interceptions.
Hurts did score 36 touchdowns, but I didn't look to see where they all came from.

So he averaged 250 total yards and 2+ TDs a game?
And that's not very good? He is only behind Fitzgerald, Allen and Lock in terms of returning players in the SEC in Total Offense per game.

He, and his coaches, struggled the last 3 games. He also was facing 3 of the best pass defenses in America (Florida #6, Washington #5, Clemson #4).
He was a true freshman and will be expected, that most true freshman before him have, to take a pretty big step as he becomes a sophomore in his 2nd year. If he doesn't, it will be a problem.

Daboll will be calling the plays. I expect a lot of 3 WR sets with some 2 TE sets that we have missed in a few years. I think there will be more play action passing to go with a powerful run game. The revolving door at RG needs to get settled in camp but the talent is there for another strong OL. Someone said the entire staff was new, but that isn't true, but this is the Rant. Daboll is in his first year at OC, Locksley co-OC and WR coach has been on staff in another role, and Key is the OL coach, 2nd year.
I look for us to mix it up, but be able to go on one of those clock ending 8 minute, 15 play drives like we would in '11 and '12 that would salt the game away. To be honest, we lacked that with Kiffin the last 3 years, even though we got to the CFP each year and won it once.

I know the stats, but I haven't looked at every play he scored on.
Also on Hurts, he was consistently bad against good defenses with the exception of Auburn, where was decent.

He was a true freshman. He struggled identifying things, making the right read, making throws into spots. Those are all pretty typical for true freshmen. He was a great runner in almost all of those games.
Most freshman make a leap from their true freshman year to their sophomore year. If he becomes an adequate passer, understands and is comfortable with the offense and continues to be a run threat, he'll be very solid. If his passing sucks again and he is a turnover machine, he probably won't be the starter by mid-season. Pretty simple.

I get what you're saying completely.
My thing is I just didn't see much to say, man when he puts it together he is going to be great. I don't think there is much more potential with him.

Perhaps - but I do think that if he is just an average passer that is a pretty good college QB. If he can consistently make 5-10 yard throws and throw an above average looping deep ball he's going to be more than good enough for us (combined with his legs).
I do think he can improve significantly throwing the ball and making decisions. Only time will tell if he does.

bruh he threw 2 ints vs Auburn and hella 5 yd dump passes that went yard. If you didn't watch the other games you clearly didn't watch the Iron bowl.

Because I didn't see how he scored all 36 touchdowns means I didn't watch him play?
I saw him play against USC, Ole Miss, Tennessee, A&M, LSU, Auburn, UF, Washington, Clemson.
Sorry I can't remember every single play of every game he played in.

I would say that there is A LOT more potential. Last season, he was often, 90%+ of the time, given a high-low read and only a 3rd of the field to throw the ball in. Unless these kids come from a complex HS passing offense, they have very limited knowledge in coverages. A high-low read tells him that if DB sits to throw it deep and if he bails to throw short. If both are covered, run like hell! When he threw INTs, it came from him failing to recognize coverages and the speed of the game.

The good news is ever since the season ended the discussion has been about his passing. We'll find out pretty quick if he's improved.

I mean its not like Bama ever needed a world beater at QB anyway.

You are giving him too much credit for his performance against Auburn. Ridley abused Auburn all day and Hurts couldn't get him the ball. If he can't get the ball to our receivers this year I hope we put him on the bench. Nobody wants to start a true freshman 2 yrs in a row but we almost won it all last year with one who sucked against the good defenses so I would rather start a guy that can utilize all of our weapons. We have a receiver corp loaded with 5 star beasts and last year they were blocking dummies for a quarterback that couldn't get them the ball. Very frustrating.
