ITs baseball, theres a high level of variability in it. Fresno St won the whole thing back in 2008 after being a 4 seed in a regional.

Little Rock nearly went to a super regional after being 19-32 this year, but won 8 of their final 10 games.

It's about getting hot at the right time, if you're slumping, it doesnt matter how good you are, you can get bounced. This doesnt mean the SEC was overrated, this isnt football or basketball where variability is a whole lot less prominent. The worst team in MLB can sweep one of the best teams in MLB on any given 3 days.

Sure, you have to be in the tournament to win the tournament.

But even if they let 16 teams from a single conference in, and the 25% of the field from that single conference maintained an 86% hit rate for Finals appearances and championships over an extended period of time, I think you would have to agree that there is something different about that conference.

Bc the sec usually always does well in baseball and honestly it isn’t an overrated thing as much as it’s sec success plus conference familiarity. This happens every once in a while. The sec is really good at baseball. Some teams in conference appear to perform better than they are bc they are familiar with conference opps style of play and players. I’ve seen it happen to the acc big 12 and big ten in basketball. See it in football sometimes too. No one was really overrated just some teams passed the eye test they may have failed if they were playing unfamiliar opponents.

The SEC wasn't overrated in baseball. Some of our best teams just had bad regionals. Doesn't mean we weren't the best conference in baseball this year and have been for many years now

baseball is a different animal than all the other sports. The name on the jersey truly doesnt mean anything in baseball

Kids that would normally go pro and be minor league staying in school. Lots of seniors and juniors on these teams

Sec teams have more freshmen and sophomores playing

All I got

Let me fix that a little bit. what is happening is the MLB draft was cut in half. Then the portal and NIL was added to the mix. So you have a ton of players who would have previously gone to minor league ball out of high school now going to college. That means guys who would otherwise have been playing at SEC type schools are having trouble seeing the field . So those dudes are now transferring to mid majors.

Simplest way of putting this is there is a lot more talent in the college game now. The most talent is in the SEC but there is still talent elsewhere, and in a sport like baseball, a lot of variance can happen over a weekend that you just don't see in sports like football where the better team wins far more frequently

SEC pays for the top players but the non money SEC schools
go and get grad transfers

so you have an ultra talented 20’yearnold against a guy who has pitched 4 years of college will never get drafted but can play.

Cade Beloso was a 5th year player at LSU in 2023. Didn’t get drafted for various reasons but he slashes .324/462/.622 and hit 16 HR in 185 AB.

That’s a high end example, but there are a lot of crafty
pitchers who are seen as topped out but are still a head of you get guys because of experience
and age.

I'm pulling for Arkansas this year even though I was acting like a sodomized bitch yesterday.

Schedule imbalance because of 16 teams. Creates an illusion that some teams are better than others. Look at the top 4 teams in league play...

1. Texas
Road Series: @ Miss State, @ Missouri, @ Kentucky, @ Arkansas, @ Oklahoma
Home Series: LSU, Georgia, Auburn, aTm, Florida
Games vs. SEC Top 4: 6
Record vs. SEC Top 4: 2-4

2. Arkansas
Road Series: @ Ole Miss, @ Vanderbilt, @ Georgia, @ Florida, @ LSU
Home Series: Missouri, South Carolina, aTm, Texas, Tennessee
Games vs. SEC Top 4: 9
Record vs. SEC Top 4: 7-2

3. LSU
Road Series: @ Texas, @ Oklahoma, @ Auburn, @ aTm, @ South Carolina
Home Series: Missouri, Miss State, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas
Games vs. SEC Top 4: 6
Record vs. SEC Top 4: 3-3

4. Vanderbilt
Road Series: @ Auburn, @ Florida, @ Oklahoma, @ Ole Miss, @ Tennessee
Home Series: aTm, Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky
Games vs. SEC Top 4: 3
Record vs. SEC Top 4: 0-3

Another team to look at is Auburn...

Auburn
Road Series: @ Kentucky, @ Georgia, @ Texas, @ Tennessee, @ Ole Miss
Home Series: Vandy, Alabama, LSU, Miss State, South Carolina
Games vs. SEC Top 4: 9
Record vs. SEC Top 4: 5-4

So don't you agree divisions would help?

fewer teams would help. When the SEC was a 12 team league, you played all but one team in the SEC every year, so everyone played basically the same conference schedule. Even 14 wasn't horrible. You played all 6 teams in your division and then 4/7 from the opposite division.

Divisions might help but there would still be imbalance just like we've seen in football when one division was way worse than the other.

Conference expansion is dumb. It killed rivalries and they've gotten so big that it dilutes the point of even having conferences. When you're playing half the teams in your conference in football and only 2/3 of your conference in a sport like baseball, what's the point of even being in the same conference?

No, I do not believe so.

When the SEC had divisions, each division winner was given the top 2 seeds in the SEC Tourney. This year for example, the West would have had the top 3 teams at the end of league play, but Vanderbilt would have been awarded the #2 seed while Arkansas and LSU slid down.

You would also have 8 teams in each division...Likely the West would consist of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Miss State, Ole Miss, Texas, and aTm...The East would have Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma (?), South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

That is pretty imbalanced when looking at the two divisions.

West would be

Texas
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Missouri
LSU
Ole Miss
Mississippi St

That would be pretty balanced with the East:

Alabama
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina
Tennessee
Kentucky
Vanderbilt

We have won the last 5 NCs with 5 different teams. Combine taht with we have a TON of pro prospects in the league.

What we found out though is that scrappy college ball players can play with prospects in college. Just because a kid projects to be a big leaguer doesn't mean they are big leaguers right now.

I also thought the SEC and college baseball as a whole was down all year despite our rankings. LSU has a good team but this is by no means one of our all time great teams top to bottom. Yet we still finished 3rd in the league, were a national seed, and were ranked #1 in the country for a large portion of the season. I am not trying to bash our squad but we have deficiencies yet are still among the best in the country because everyone else has equal or bigger deficiencies.
