Why stop at 16 teams, SEC? Build a super league and your own CFP.

While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey offered his annual address on the first day of SEC Media Days last week, he was asked if he envisioned a future in which the Power 5 conferences would break away from the NCAA’s yoke to operate as its own entity.
“That’s not the focus,” Sankey said.
Knowing what we know now – that the SEC is having a flirtation with Texas and Oklahoma that seems as if it will reach the finish line – perhaps a better question would have been whether the SEC plans to expand to where it has enough reach, power and financial incentive to break off as a lone ranger, at least in football..

I don't want any part of some independent natty that will be disputed by Ohio State every year.

The article mentions how the SEC got a taste last year of a CFB season as an independent operator.
I wonder how much the COVID experience of going it alone actually weighed on this decision?

I think in the end there will be a couple of 20 team leagues that essentially operate like the NFL with their own separate playoffs followed by a championship game between the winners.
It'll take a while to get there, but I think the current SEC and B1G are going to be the cores of those two leagues.

I agree. At first this super-conference deal made sense to me, since there was talk of expanding (and maybe standardizing) the CFP.
Now, as more rumors about other teams come out, it almost sounds like they could be trying to break away and form their own league altogether.

Certainly sounds exactly like that.
Do away with the problems of having to include smaller programs, standardize the schedule, dominate the ratings.

I think that’s the goal. All we have to do is get OSU or Clemson. Then we say “Yeah, we’ve decided to not participate in the ncaa playoff.” ESPN airs the sec playoff only. Promotes it only, etc. Everyone else will have to sign up or miss out on the true playoff and millions. Just need Clemson or OSU to get it rolling.

Seems like that’s the direction this is heading

It’s going to be a North Carolina or Virginia school but not till 2035. Would be insane to get ND (even though it would be a terrible fit). Sports media would melt.

And ironically those are the names being mentioned in the rumors.
(Obviously not sure if those rumors have any basis in fact, or just wishful thinking.)
