Why hasn’t a major program scooped up Mark Stoops?

What he’s done at Kentucky is pretty remarkable.

I'm sure the interest has been there, but I'm not sure Stoops wants to go anywhere. Stoops may be one of those rare coaches who understand that their own ambition may be detrimental to the longevity of success.

Stoops has a great gig, given the expectations there.

I said ‘major’ program

All kidding aside, this just tells me he has good judgment. That roster is a disaster.

Indeed. His first 3 seasons also keep others at bay (2-10, 5-7, 5-7 hurt his win % big time)

He might leave for Iowa (his Alma mater), Ohio state (don't see that one happening) or fsu but o think they made him mad last go around after his interview

He's got a sweet gig and no reason to leave unless the right job comes open, and we'd probably throw more money at him

Stoops needs the right situation. His methodology isn’t an overnight method. A job like LSU wouldn’t be the right fit, IMO. Rabid, hard to please fans with expectations of quick resurgence. He might jump, but I could also see him sticking around UK.

Dude knows he’s got a cushy gig even if it’s just 8-5/9-4 in Lexington.

He's already the 15th highest paid coach and has a cushy contract that gets him a guaranteed extension at 7 wins. The boosters back him, the fans back him, and the team has bought into the culture he has created.

This question has been coming up almost every year since he broke the bowl drought. I just don't see him going anywhere any time soon his contract is so favorable, the expectations are generally low, and people in Kentucky freaking love the guy

Everyone seems to forget the early stuff with Mark Stoops. Terrible clock management - lost two different gameds (FLA and VANDY) because they somehow couldn't line up against an outside receiver near the numbers. Some shaky hires at coordinator and position coach.

He's been a learn as he goes head coach - and it's worked out for the most part. But it was painful getting there. Now ? Looks like he's got a program put together that recruits and develops pretty good at all three levels of the defense, RB, and OL. Still work to do at QB, WR, and TE.

Frankly - if he got a bigger job - I think he'd fall apart. He needs to stay a mid-level guy. Very much like Dan Mullen.

This, and honestly as a fan I'd be completely okay with that. If we pop off a few great seasons here and there with 6 or 7 being our floor during a down year, I'm content. It took over a decade of going to 1 to 3 games a year to see them win in person. So the fact that we're actually competitive in a majority of the games is all I can really ask for.

Love the guy, hope they pay him and Big Dawg Vince every penny they deserve, and look forward to many years seeing that ugly mug trot out onto the field

Paid well to be where he is without having to meet a ton of expectations.

Because he's paid a ton of money with realistic job expectations. If I were him I'd have to have my salary doubled, at least, to go from a place where 8-4 is a great season to a place where it gets you fired.

Okay, some people might aspire for more, sure. However... some people want the challenge. He's turned us from a laughing stock to a team that's sort of becoming a nationally recognized name. Recruiting is up and for the most part has been consistent. He's proven that he can motivate players to play above what their prospect rating is. If recruiting keeps improving, who knows where things go. It's been a slow build, but just because Kentucky isn't respectable now doesn't it can't be by the time he leaves. He also knows that we're going to be a lot more patient with him than other schools in the conference. Outside of Saben, no SEC coach has been in their position longer than Stoops. This give a lot of job security, which is something I sure a defensive guy would appreciate

But if he goes to a bigger school, there’s going to be much higher expectations. He stays at Kentucky and wins 7-8 games per year with the occasional 10 win ranked season, and he gets a lifetime contract. That’d get him fired at LSU or some other bigger name school.
