Birmingham is not a "shithole" now. Most underappreciated southern city in US IMO. New UAB football stadium under construction starting now. Gentrification of downtown continues.

The area around Legion Field is still definitely a "shithole".

Games played at Legion Field (not counting Iron Bowl) starting with 1960 (just picked a random year):

1960: Auburn 2, Alabama 2
1961: Auburn 1, Alabama 2
1962: Auburn 2, Alabama 2
1963: Auburn 0, Alabama 2
1964: Auburn 2, Alabama 2
1965: Auburn 1, Alabama 2
1966: Auburn 2, Alabama 3
1967: Auburn 0, Alabama 3
1968: Auburn 2, Alabama 2
1969: Auburn 0, Alabama 2
1970: Auburn 2, Alabama 3
1971: Auburn 0, Alabama 2
1972: Auburn 1, Alabama 4
1973: Auburn 1, Alabama 2
1974: Auburn 1, Alabama 3
1975: Auburn 0, Alabama 4
1976: Auburn 1, Alabama 3
1977: Auburn 0, Alabama 2
1978: Auburn 1, Alabama 4

Auburn also played 1 game a year for 7 of 10 years in the 50's.

Go to an Arky Game in Little Rock and you will understand. Legion Field Area was nice in 1968 when I went to my first Iron Bowl. Saw Bama in 1978 and someone broke into my roommates car couple of blocks from Legion Field. Parked in a guy's yard "Didn't see nothing man"

Veteran’s Memorial is the home stadium for Jackson State. It is outdated and not really a great venue for SEC games any longer. Jackson State would like to have a new stadium on their own campus, but they don’t have the funding. Both Ole Miss and State discontinued games in Jackson because they wanted to improve their on campus stadia and have all their games on campus.

Baton Rouge is a shithole and we still play our home games there. Excuses.

Both stadiums are rather dated. I've been to Legion Field for an Iron Bowl and it wasn't very nice back then. I suspect Veteran's Memorial is worse. Miss State/Ole Miss/Bama/AU have a lot better home stadiums these days with a higher capacity. I never understood the draw of a annual neutral site game. Build A better stadium if yours can't handle the draw.

Yes. The SWC Classic needs to go. As long as Jerrah Jones is around I'm afraid A&M is stuck with playing WPS at Jerryworld though.

The ushers and concession workers would still wear Bama gear while Auburn was the home team.

The economics are different now. Each home game in Tuscaloosa for Alabama for example, generates something like $20M-22M dollars of economic activity locally.

They also have on-campus stadiums they've invested hundreds of millions of dollars to finance.

I see a common theme.

How many home games did bama play there in the 70s and 80s that didn't involve Auburn?

The decision to play games on each respective campus was the main reason. Jackson was getting bad in 1991, but nothing like it is today. The ghettos grew from the westward into central Jackson and moved north. West Jackson has been an absolute ghetto for over 30 years, and was undesirable for 10 years prior to that.

Yep, I went to many games at the stadium in Jackson in the 1970-1980’s. It was a great venue then but it’s time has passed.
Other factors are involved besides just Stadium improvements on campus.
Accessibility to Starkvegas is much easier today. You have 3 four lane highways in-out of there, many more hotels, restaurants and in general the region has grown and is more capable of hosting games now.

Back to some of other differences, campus is just beautiful compared to the area around The Stadium in Jackson. DWS has suites, luxury boxes and amenities not available in Jackson and capacity on campus is now actually larger than Jackson.

I do have fond memories of the Jackson games. We had friends that would set up their travel trailers on Friday evening and stay until Sunday and would be a stone’s throw from the stadium. Saw a number of DH’s including SEC teams and even Arkansas pre-SEC days against OM. Lots of fun then but today on campus is better now.
