Off hand, Ohio State is the only team I can think of that still does it. Used to be ubiquitous in college football.

What was the significance of the white bone stickers vs the black bone stickers?

Too many barking fans. It embarrasses the University. They're trying to ease off on all the dogs and bones stuff.

One of them was for grades or academic accomplishment or something like that.

It helps us against the Aggies. They can't concentrate.

black bones were for academics.
To the OP- this is just one of those things that all coaches change when they first take over to make their own fingerprint on things. When Jim Donnan first got here he added a black stripe down the helmet whch had never been done before. When Richt got here he didn't like it so removed the black stripe, and also brought back the helmet stickers from the Dooley days. When Kirby got here he got rid of that and went back to a cleaner look

Dooley put stars on the helmet during Herschel’s era.

Like a Ewers pass in the general direction of Daylen Everette.

I knew that we used stars, but i was under the impression we also had bones for some length of time as well. Maybe my memory is failing.

Michigan does it as well.

Like when Franchione removed players’ names from jerseys in the old “play for the name on front” thing.
Was the height of his coaching input.
Made all the difference in the world.
