Why does Kevin Steele keep getting DC jobs?

No troll, serious question. Look at his career. Everyone points to the fact that Saban hired him twice, but Saban also demoted him after one year in favor of a guy who had never been a D1 cooridnator, and then brought him back in an off-field role before making him a position coach.
I get that he's a good recruiter, but he's mostly been a position coach throughout his career. Alabama was actually his first DC job, after the failed HC stint at Baylor. Then he went to Clemson and sucked as DC there. Then a subordinate position again at Alabama until LSU hired him, and now LSU fans are delighted to see him go. The best analogy I can make is one from the world of pro wrestling, actually: Kevin Steele is the Vince Russo of college DCs. I don't get it. I really don't.

In the history of Saban DC has one ever not spinned it into more money?

To be honest, LSU was turned down by almost everyone. He was all we really could get. He did ok but I'm not sad that he left

I mean kiffen sucked his way up the ladder until reaching the bama staff somehow so is it really that shocking this happens?

You post that as if you have any real knowledge of who did, or did not, want the job. Just shut up.

Somebody at Auburn thinks he's worth $1.6 million a year for 3 years. What does Gus see in him? I mean they paid that for Muschamp caliber DC. But this is freaking KEVIN STEELE.

Holy shite you dumb if you think those situations are remotely similar. Kiffin, while a huge douche in the past, is the best OC in the SEC.

Safe hire, pro background, knows conference/division and recruits region well. Not a homerun but definitely a double, conservatively speaking.

Because maybe, now stay with me here... but maybe... I know this will sound crazy... But just maybe... Maybe the guys who are paid millions of dollars a year to make such decisions know a little bit more about football than you.... Maybe.

Good gosh, he wasn't a bad DC this year.
No where near as bad as made out to be. LSU special teams was absolutely ATROCIOUS with field position all year doing the defense no favors.
Let me see LSU's defensive stats ranks. At one point the run D was among tops in the country.
Let me see yards per game overall as well please.. and comparison in the SEC and NCAA.
Steel did a great job limiting opponents in the first half while we mounted leads.. we gave up a lot of points with big leads.. which were irrelevant..

Yeah, Jay Jacobs knows exactly what he's doing.

I also agree that he did ok and not exactly sad he left, however it depends upon who replaces him. I wouldn't just rejoice now..
I also agree he is a safe hire. Good recruiter too.
People use his last season at Clemson and that Bowl game in which an incredible offense beat a team that quit pretty bad.. too often against him..
He may have been an awful HC and whatnot prior.. but he was a decent DC at Clemson for a little while and he was decent at LSU. He is knowledgeable and a "safe" hire in that he may not be great, but he should be "ok"
There were worse DC's in the league. I am glad LSU didn't hire Manny Diaz. Now that guy was trash in games.

Maybe because:
I would think he's pretty good if LSU and Miles were trying to retain him before he accepted AU's offer.
(I know this goes against the "poke fun at an opponent/rival theme, but I thought I'd share it.)

quote:
This is what Saban said about Steele's ability as a coach two days before their first game together at Alabama in 2007: "I don't know if I could remember anybody that I would say, all around, is any better than him. And I've been around a lot of good coaches."

Yeah, that isn't true. They called Steele in the office to discuss an exit plan. Miles literally spit out his coffee when he heard AU was going to pay 1.6

Because he takes the jobs no one else will?
