Seriously, because Bama could not handle the embarrassment if they should someday, somehow, lose to Troy or whoever. The emotional scarring of the ULM loss still haunts them 10 years later.

I know a few years back Saban said he’s been in favor of it everywhere he’s been. I could see them scheduling one of the many FCS schools but they’ll never play Troy, USA, or UAB.

This will all be solved by playing a 9 game conference schedule, which by the way coach Saban has been an advocate for quite awhile now. As for the scared angle please ...Power 5 teams turn down playing Bama because they don't want to take an early season loss

Could you imagine the hell the Alumni of these schools would give Gumpnation were they to win?

No way the Univerity is going to risk the wrath of 100,000 toothless tshirt wearting inbreds marching to campus (if they can find it).

I kid, kinda

UAB has like 35-40 times the budget of AUM and 4-5x the students.

That really is it and it is a good reason.

I think 4 national titles a kicking everyone's arse on a regular basis has made the ULM fluke a distant memory

Yep. Losing that game in 07 was no big deal even then because we knew things were trending up. Now it never crosses my mind unless some butthurt opposing fan brings it up.

You forgot to list Troy’s opponents.

Maybe to opposing fans that like to talk about it. It was embarrassing but we knew better days lay ahead and now it really is like it never happened. What Saban has done since then has more than made up for that failure.

Why doesn't OM play Southern Mississippi each year, or MS State play them, in a reciprocal manner?

Uhhhhh we just finished a home and home with them last year and have another scheduled, Gumpnation once again proving it is the conference's most ignorant fanbase, congrats

Bama and Aub with both get nothing out of playing South Alabama in football. It’s a no win situation for them. Same with Basketball. Alabama lost to South in the 89 tourney. Aub got blown out by South in the 80’s when they were good with Barkley. It’s easier to avoid these in state games in football and basketball. Until recently, South had a long run as the best baseball team in the state. Then the Sec started to take baseball seriously. A football game between South and Bama and Aub will never be scheduled. Those two could give a rats arse about helping a fellow program in the state. I have no issues with it

Alabama plays in-state teams in basketball, just not UAB.

Also, what period of time was South the best basketball program in the State? There was maybe one year in the late 2000s at the end of Gottfried/start of Grant, but that's it.

Never said basketball. Baseball. South had a long period of time being the best baseball team in the state. Bama has played South one time in the regular season in basketball. It was a tournament a ways back.

Ah, my fault. Yes, South has a very good baseball program. Helluva list of alums from the last 20 years or so too.

As the AD has said, "UA has developed a good model that has worked for them, and they will continue to respect that."

It was a polite way of saying they have zero interest in promoting any instate school to any degree.

They view it as a zero sum game for instate recruiting, power, and influence. They believe in relative vs absolute gains. Wherein, others' growth means your own loss. So, they won't risk a dollar that might provide ANY degree of positive exposure/revenue growth for those other teams.

Hell, the state government had to step in to force them to play Auburn.

Is it dhickish, maybe. But, you can't argue with the results for influence in the state.
