Saban wasn't the GM of the Dolphins. The GM, on the advice of their medical staff, passed on Brees.

wrong. Miami's team doctors are the ones who failed drew brees. can you people learn and remember reality? Furthermore, Drew Brees might not be so great without Payton or someone comparable. Let's not forget, Miami wasn't the first or second franchise to pass on Drew Brees.

he definitely could have been our "bear" with no controversy. but, the nfl was an itch he had to scratch.

These are revisionist history lies perpetrated by Saban. It’s sad how he continues to throw people under the bus for his failures with the Dolphins

IIRC, it wasn't his call. He wanted Brees but the Dolphins medical staff wouldn't clear him.

Wanted to see if he could win in the NFL. He couldn’t.

In the 13 seasons since he left... 11 times the dolphins have failed to win at least the shitty 9 games saban mustered in a season. Didn't you hire an OC that went 1-15 with the Dolphins

I believe this has been discussed at length and I'm sure many people on this thread have answered it. Bottom line: Saban always had an itch to become an NFL head coach. It's considered the pinnacle of the football coaching profession and it was an itch he needed to scratch. After he left LSU he soon realized he had made a mistake because his true calling was shaping boys into men rather than coaching professional athletes.

I don't think Saban has ever said the decision was taken out of his hands, though I could be mistaken. I believe Alabama fans have since twisted his words to make it appear like he was completely innocent in missing out on Drew Brees. The story as it happened was Saban wanted Brees but the medical staff advised him not to take him because they believed he likely would never play again. Saban listened to their advice and decided to pass on Brees. The rest, as they say, is history.

The reason Saban took the Dolphins job is that he had complete control over player personnel.
He did pass on Brees and those he's thrown under the bus with the Dolphins because of that decision are all on him.
Those people don't have any vested interest to contradict anything he says at this point.

You can’t trust Saban on it, he talks out of both sides of his mouth on the issue. He says Brees failed the physical, but that he also offered him a contract.

The guy could have amassed a number of titles so great that no one would ever come close.
I know it's fun to troll with, but Saban's career goals had always been to be an NFL head coach.

And remember, the NFL was different back when he left.
Miami was one of the historically good teams, like the Cowboys. New England was still considered an anomaly.
Just like the Cowboys sucked, and then Jimmy Johnson revived them and got a few Super Bowls, everyone assumed Saban would do the same with the Dolphins.

He didn't. He either couldn't, or didn't have the patience to. Either way, he figured out he'd rather be running a major college program. In college, he's the equivalent of both the HC and the GM. Total control, including personnel. Generic answering to an AD where he could just say "I'm winning, leave me alone", instead of playing nice with the GM, owner, etc.

Much has been made about the Culpepper/Brees scenario, not sure it would have mattered long-term. He might have won more, but I don't think he'd ever have been happy not having total control. He'd always have eventually looked to go back to the "right" college situation, and Alabama was the absolute luckiest circumstance for him.

Had he stayed at LSU, I think he'd have wondered what more he could do if he had that little extra in resources, history etc.

When Saban arrived at LSU in 2000 it had been over 40 years since LSU's last national title.

He took a job on the NFL. He can't coach two teams at once.

Don’t forget the Monet oil painting in the Aggie office to commemorate the event lol.
