Yes, but they aren’t signing up for a front line combat rate/mos if they just want a paycheck. You can choose your job. Also combat mos is the least likely to gain career training (if poor). You can be a mechanic or electrician in the military too

And before you ask if they are dumb there are plenty of non combat jobs that don’t require any certain asvab score

If you had a prior condition that caused you to care about health insurance at 18 you aren’t getting in anyway

Anyone who has trained for combat has an itch to go. Even they aren’t getting a shot in these post Afghanistan conflicts. It’s the very few that have 10x more training than your average grunt, and I promise you they are ecstatic for the opportunity

If there is an extremely high value mission it will likely always be DEVGRU, which is team 6.

If DEVGRU is the majors, regular SEAL and SF (green beret) teams are AAA Ball. Delta would be MLB as well.

All the respect to the regular SEAL teams, they go through the same initial selection and produce all the DEVGRU guys. But DEVGRU isn’t 50% 22 year olds that can’t wait to go to the bar after training (though all were that at one point). They are the handpicked and experienced Team guys that undergo a second selection and even more rigorous and specialized training.

If it’s important and it’s not a large scale ground operation like Iraq then it’s DEVGRU getting the call every time. At least for the things we’ll likely be discussing here
