Right..which is why I thought Franklin might be a decent coach after turning them into a decent team for a cpl of years. But I may have been wrong since he is hot garbage at PSU.
Regardless, Mason didn't earn that paycheck and no womens goalie with her weight not listed was going to save his job.

Franklin is a good coach but his best years are behind him. Coaches have a short window of opportunity to do something and after that it is over.
Until the school pledges to get better then it is a hopeless situation.

Trolling aside, Vandy needs to adopt a service academy model for their football program.

Ask Herm Edwards. He'll say you play to win the game.

Tony Franklin is 1-5 at Penn State! Mason got nailed when he had to go All-SEC games. He's a good defensive coach and will probably show up in somebody's program soon (I'm betting the Saban think tank).

Wasn’t his fault Vandy has shitty alum and fans.
Because he couldn't even muster up an extra point attempt for a feel good puff piece

For a really good coach, Vanderbilt should be a very good job. Win 5 or 6 games a year and be reasonably competitive and a coach can stick around with none of the pressures at the big programs. Look at Cutcliffe at Duke. He makes, relatively speaking, good but not great money. But all Duke expects him to do is to be reasonably competitive (I am and old Duke alum and suffered through really miserable football in my day). Vanderbilt should be a better program and is similar to Duke. Its academics will draw a certain kind of player, likely to graduate and improve and develop each year. They are not going to be a big time program, but clearly a good coach can do much better than Mason did.
The problem is Vandy doesn't have a Vandy in conference to count as one of those 6 wins...they have 2-3 pretty good teams in the east each year they most likely aint going to beat and maybe 3 rent a wins. Even in good years they need one of UT, UF or UGA to be down for a win among those and be better than USC, UK, and Missourri to sniff 3 wins. They will occasionally get a down SEC west rotation and have a shot there and Ole Miss is usually better, even when down, than the bottom half of the SEC East...but they could conceivably get a win there occasionally. Winning 5 shouldn't be too much but 6 may be a reach....

Seems like the right path...I hope they choose to avoid it. Paul fricking Johnson and his O Linemen killing cheating arse is still out there somewhere....

I know you said relative to other coaches, but it's amazing that almost $3m/year in total compensation is ever considered "not great." Just shows how wild coaching salaries have gotten near the top.
He's probably made $25m+ total at Duke, and still has a losing record (although there are some very successful seasons sprinkled in, which Mason never had).
