He was building a colossus there. He would have become a legend.
Reckon he has had misgivings about leaving?

I think he just wanted to prove himself at the next level. You have to remember he coached alongside Pitino for awhile and considered him an advisor. They both seem to be of the philosophy of wanting to chase that next project to build. I think that’s why he was pretty close to coming to Kentucky too.

Become a legend? Lol. Dude is already a legend and wanted to prove it in the league. He was on pace for COY this year with OKC. Unfortunately we followed him up with MW.

The NBA became more and more intriguing as he grew tired of the recruiting game. I think it was hard for him to leave because of all of the connections both professionally and personally, but he ultimately wanted to get his shot. I don't ever see him coming back to the college game, and wouldn't surprise me at all if he retires fairly early.

Have you ever been to Gainsville?

NBA was an opportunity and OKC was a great job to go after.

Not to get off topic, but whatever happened to that point guard that Donovan had on one of his last UF teams.
The guy's first name was Scotty and that team had a disappointing FF loss. That team was actually favored to win that FF, I believe.
Did the point guard I'm talking about go on to pro ball somewhere?

Billy Donovan won back to back titles at Florida. Why in the hell would he have left for a school within his own conference?

Scottie Wilbekin
Plays in Israel I think.

He was an assistant at UK and had a lot of ties to Lexington as a result. He’s a Pitino disciple. He came up and interviewed. It was close enough that multiple media outlets announced it as a done deal. It’s a Top 5 college basketball job and he had the right personality to handle the media and the hoopla that comes with it. But he decided to stay in Gainesville because of his family and they were content in Gainesville.
People knock him sometimes because they claim he had lightening in a bottle at UF. It’d make sense that he’d want to prove that elsewhere.

Scotty Wilbekin.
He plays in Europe. Was the 2018 MVP/Finals MVP of the EuroCup (second-tier) and moved to a EuroLeague (first-tier) team in 2019. One of my favorite college players.
Chris Chiozza was making a splash as a backup PG/sparkplug for the Nets before the NBA suspended.

Money was too good, he never really had any connections to Florida. He had a run at Florida but it wasn't gonna keep going. When a conference school wins a title the other schools up their game. It gets tougher and tougher. Msu and LSU owned baseball and that changed. Bama and Georgia owned gymnastics and that changed. Forever, it was only Kentucky in basketball. Arkansas, Florida have titles now. 30 years ago that wouldn't have happened. Forever, nobody besides Bama had even a remote chance of winning it in football and since 1980 Georgia, Florida auburn and LSU have won it. When your brother accomplishes something, u do whatever it takes to match. Bama has had more to do with auburn building its football program than auburn has.

Years ago I heard a reporter say that Donovan was frustrated with the fact that he still had trouble recruiting the 5 stars to Florida after winning two NCAA titles. Don't know if it's true or not, but I would understand it at Florida or any SEC school not named Kentucky.

I think this was similar to Bob Stoops & UF. Can't tell you how many times we've heard it was a done deal he was coming to be our HC. At the end of the day it just wasn't true.
