Not sure what Vince Dooley's previous experience was but none of Ray Goff, Jim Donnan, Mark Richt, or Kirby Smart were "proven winners".

While true, this thread will be allowed.

What is amazing is that UF seems to be on the wrong side of these hires. Why wouldn't Muschamp work out? He was the most-Saban like Saban disciple until Kirby showed up. The Shark F*cker also succeeded with and without Saban. Mullen took the SECW doormat and made them competitive. That should have been a slam dunk at Florida.

None of them can recruit well enough to keep up with the Jones'.

It's not that they can't, they just never try to for whatever reason. They've almost always gone for the up and coming coach hoping they strike gold, which they've done a pretty good job of multiple times with Spurrier and Meyer. Mullen was probably the first coach they ever hired with any sort of track record. "Proven winners" don't always work out either. It's very hard to predict if someone can translate success from one school to another. Very few coaches have achieved elite results at multiple destinations.

Muschamp didn't work out at South Carolina either. I know it's a harder place to win, but he was absolutely dreadful at South Carolina, and Clemson being good obviously hurts them. But if he was "the most Saban-like disciple" he wouldn't have gone 28-30 there.

I'd argue Mullen was a "Proven Winner" as far as that phrase makes sense at all (which isn't far)

‘None of them were sure things. Nothing is ever a sure thing. Our administration doesn’t like paying players. Billy is finally breaking through that obstacle. If Muschamp would have been able to pay like Kirby we would have been golden. Champ spent all his salary cap on D. McElwain didn’t work hard, Mullen worked even less. We haven’t put a premium on getting better players until Napier. It may be too late‘

Ah, the oh so fresh, ‘everyone cheats but us’ take.

Florida has never been able to get a proven big name coach in football
Goof RB coach
Dannon - 1AA Marshall
Richt - OC FSU
Kirby - DC ALA

where's the proven big name sitting HC that UGA's hired post-Dooley? hell even Vince was an unproven assistant at Auburn when he took the GA job.

Muschamp is clearly not a good HC. He failed at not one but two SEC schools.

What has shark Fricker been successful at without Saban? He had a few decent years at Colorado State, but has been mostly mediocre at CMU and is currently 2-6 and probably going to step down or get fired this year.

You cannot judge a hire based on hindsight. Muschamp was not a bad hire in 2010 because he failed at South Carolina in 2016 and beyond. You can say that Carolina was dumb to higher him, and you'd be right. But hiring Will Muschamp in 2010 was about the same analysis that went into hiring Kirby Smart in 2015.

I'm not talking about Muschamp in 2020 or even 2014. Muschamp was the only LSU coach who went to the Dolphins with Saban, then he was a successful DC at the Barn and Texas. So successful that Texas made him "Head Coach in Waiting," if I recall correctly. He appeared to be a great hire by UF in 2010. He just didn't pan out.

The Urban jab was a bit too far since he was the next big thing type coavh in the media

However factually speaking he was not proven as a winner in the P5 and many second guessed if his offense would work in the SEC

However Dan Mullen was a terrible lazy and cheap hire. There’s a reason why he was the third choice after ucla and Nebraska big times Florida and out flexed the lowly gators for 2 coaching targets.

Dan never had offers from any other program even though he had been trying forever to get out of moo state

But Starkville Scott Strickland got desperate and scared about getting humiliated by another program again, so instead of continuing to go for a proven winner, he settled for discount Dan since he knew that Dan would jump through hoops to go to another job. It was a bad hire and that’s why Florida is a massive dumpster fire now.

However Starkville Scott Stricklin has not stopped at turning Gainesville into Moo State east, but wants to turn it into a G5 caliber program with the bargin bin hire of Sun Belt Billy

Especially since the last "proven winner" UGA hired to be HC was fired (although he was a good recruiter at least).
