Why worry about your betters? If you truly are one of the 12 fans of Hardy High you should be content gnawing on the scraps the SEC throws you and signing the players State and Ole Miss don't want.

Because the Mississippi schools are founding members. No other reasons.

They are embarrassing and historically in the bottom of the pack in both athletics and academics.
I forgot the SEC is all about academics. That being said, the Mississippi schools are not bottom in the pack of most sports in recent memory unless you are simply using national titles as a measuring stick. Very original troll though.

The SEC was formed in Jackson and headquartered there for a while after its creation. Right place, right time for State and Ole Miss. USM was an all female teachers college at the time.
Most people don't realize this, but the SEC and ACC were one big conference and split. The SEC took the 13 universities to the South and West of the Appalachian Mountains, and the others stayed in the Southern Conference, which basically became the ACC.
The only exception - Clemson. Clemson had a choice to join the SEC at the beginning and chose to remain with the Carolina and Virginia schools.
The Southern Conference has a very interesting timeline. Note that Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi State were the only charter members of the Southern Conference who were charter members and remain members of the SEC.
The Original Big Six, if you will.
