I don't get it. Unless you had seriously unrealistic expectations about what kind of coach would take that job then I just don't see the problem.

Luke was a reasonable hire considering the circumstances and unless he got some astronomical buyout like Orgeron did then it will be easy to move on once you get past the sanctions and the arrow starts to point up. And who knows, you get really lucky and he actually works out.

You just really didn't have any other attractive options.

I think it was a good hire considering the pending ruling and landscape of hires in the SEC this season

I think he did really well considering, but bama did spank that booty pretty badly.

I think Luke was a decent hire considering everything going on. Knows how to motivate a team and keep them together through bad situations. Best of luck to the man. He has my full support, as would any other OM coach.

They'll be lucky to field a team next year.

I think it was a smart, calculated move. More jobs are opening than expected. There is no firm date for the release of the NCAA findings. OM was risking being left out in the cold and still having to name Luke as HC. They won some PR and created a little goodwill with the blue-haired Luke supporters.

Even the harshest Luke critics have to admit that naming him HC now is better than naming him after Christmas.

Because we are a dumb fan base. OM fans hated Luke as an OL coach because he had a bunch of Nutt recruits trying to run hurry up and surprise surprise it didn't make for a good OL. Then when he got his guys in there and we couldn't run the ball he got the blame and not the OC or RB's. Now when he's the HC and we have our first 1000 yard rusher in 8 years, he gets no credit. I am surprised at the outrage too. Our fan base had given up on the Taggart pipedream so it wasn't like they were expecting a HR hire. It was basically down to Doeren, Morris, Luke and maybe Strong.

There might have been some serviceable ones. Ones that Turnkey Search could have uncovered. Did Turnkey actually do anything in identifying candidates above and beyond what the average poster on here could have done?

I don't hate the Luke hire. I understand the reasoning as he wont have to retool the entire operation and already knows the recruiting status and area. Keep it cheap and hope that in a couple years we will be in a better position to hire a better HC.

I think most OM fans want the admin/boosters to take outside candidates seriously and not just hire someone with OM ties.

Because deep down they know what it signals. OM is a school that CAN pay $5M per year for a coach. The fact that they are paying Luke $9M over 4 years tells you the admin knows the hammer is coming and he's the stop-gap guy. After 4 years of average (at best..I remember Shula years on probation), OM will get back to paying $4-5M per year and they'll hire someone better.

It's not Luke they are upset about. It's what hiring him means that they are upset about.

No it's definitely Luke we are upset about. He was a garbage OL coach, garbage run game coordinator and I expect he will follow the trend as head coach.

We lost the Cal, a&m, and Arkansas games because of coaching. We won the state game because Fitzgerald messed his ankle up, the rest of the games we either were blown out by good teams or we outscored shitty teams with the talent we have on offense.

Some of the games that we won were almost lost by stupid decisions by Luke

I'm just glad that OM hired a firm for a coaching search and went with the guy on campus. Money well spent.

Yeah it's pretty much this ... summed it up pretty well here. IMO I think Luke is about as good as the next guy to the coach that falls on the sword for us and given his love for the university he will gladly do this. I just hope with extra money we might be able to upgrade our OC & DC to give Luke a better chance to do well.

To be fair and play devil's advocate here ... how much of that actually fall on Luke and does Longo & McGriff not have to be held accountable for any or all of what you mentioned yourself?
