I just want to tell you up front, I don't like you. I couldn't possibly like you as a person for being a OklaMiss fan.

pay attention, rookie. until they give us a playoff system, it is essential to portray your conference as the "best" in the nation year after year. so, we pull for our conference for two reasons:
That's just too cerebral for me. Screw all that, a team I hate will continue to be a team I hate regardless of whether they are part of my conference.
And I could give two s*%ts whether OU fans ever cheer for Texas. To me it sounds kind of homo to use that as justification for cheering on Florida if you're an Auburn or Georgia fan.
Remember back in 2007 the Big 10 was so strong that ESPN was pushing for a rematch of the Game of the Century just weeks after it was originally played?
Well, the Florida Gators had just escaped the SEC with its lone loss against a d*** good Auburn team (that finished ranked in the top 10) and had just beaten #8 Arkansas in the SEC championship and were highly deserving of a chance as well.
It would've been a d*** shame had the nation was forced to watch a rematch of Ohio State vs. Michigan (which Ohio St won). The Florida Gators got the bid over Michigan (which sent Michigan fans in to an outrage about how "un-classy" Urban Meyer is) and proceeded to humiliate Ohio State 41-14.
We truly believe that the SEC's best team year in/year out could/should compete for the National Championship and would have a high probability of winning it. To ensure this happens, we need the conference to be perceived as the best in the land. It was a bit bitter for all schools to watch a 12-0 Auburn team in 2004 get snubbed for a chance to play in the title game with the nods going to USC and Oklahoma (USC won this game 55-19). As a fan of one of the conference's smaller schools, one doesn't want to imagine your team going undefeated throughout the entire season and conference play and not get a chance to play for it all.
Now, I'm not saying that USC would not have destroyed everyone that year nor that Oklahoma was not deserving as both are very true statements. I'm just throwing a bit of evidence on why we cheer for the conference now more than ever in out-of-conference play and bowl season.
It's been this "aura" that's been displayed the last few years that caused the SEC to receive a VERY LARGE contract from ESPN. Now, instead of hearing Penn State vs. USC and the Rose Bowl getting shoved down our throats since it's the only BCS game ESPN/ABC has the rights to, we'll have a lot of the analysts further praising the SEC.
Recruits also want to play in the best conferences. It's win/win.

How the hell is a Longhorn fan wondering how somebody can root for the other team against Chokelahomo?

How hard is it to figure out that the better your conference looks the better you look. If you don't think that Florida's 2006 NC helped LSU in the rankings in 2007, then you don't understand the system. Just look at the perception of the Big 10 now. Sure, Ohio State will still get a lot of looks because of who they are, but their weak conference showing will certainly hurt when it comes to selecting teams for the NC game next year.

that doesn't mean you automatically root for a hated in-conference rival.
Well, there might be the issue. Florida really isn't that hated by LSU fans. Sure, we want to beat them whenever we play them, but there's no real hate between the two schools or fan bases.
I think we did see some chinks in the SEC's armor of unity when Alabama played Utah and some LSU and Auburn fans were for Utah. Obviously, there's a lot of hate between Auburn and Alabama, and there are still some LSU fans who can't get over the Saban thing and hate Alabama as much as Auburn fans do.
So, while the SEC does engender more loyalty across school lines from its fan bases than most conferences do, there is a limit to it and it's not automatic that every single fan of every single SEC team is always pulling for every SEC team against every non-conference opponent.
