Kirby vs Jimbo as head coaches on gameday-

Kirby - 1
Jimbo - 0

Fisher got to play in the Almost Competitive Conference with little challenge.

It’s been proven time and time again that the best ACC team can beat the best SEC team on any given year. 1 vs 1. Not the whole conference vs whole conference. 2013 FSU beat Auburn. 2016 Clemson beat the best Bama team ever to that point.

Jimbo's team had fewer rushing yards against Kirby's defense than he has wins against Kirby.

11-5 in 2 of those years. He finished 14th and 8th, losing the Peach and winning the Orange.

Two losses to Clemson, one to Georgia Tech, one to Houston, one to North Carolina, one to Louisville.

This was all with a top 5 roster.

I mean we all blast Dabo for running through a weak conference yet Jimbo went 10-3 for two seasons against the same conference then just completely imploded with more talent than any other team he was facing besides Alabama.

It’s fair to knock the latter point of his FSU tenure a bit but he didn’t have top end facilities or assistant coach salary pool to work with there, which can be a factor.

On the flip side Jimbo’s organization skills have been called into question before which I think can explain some of the mild underachievment his teams have shown at times.

His “Misses” on QB were and are a MAJOR part of FSU’s demise into the abyss. He had 4-5 Bombs at FSU that led to the Francois/Skinney Blackmon debacle.

It's a fair argument but my rebuttal would be that facilities are basically all about recruiting and Jimbo's recruiting wasn't hurting at all, he had one of the best rosters in college football nearly the entire time he was at FSU.

As for assistants, they still had the same DC in 2014 when they went to the CFP as they did in 2017 when they fell apart.

Obviously, Jimbo runs the offensive side of the ball and I understand that's a very broad overview but those "hindrances" didn't seem to hold Jimbo back during the early part of his tenure.

My opinion is that Jimbo hasn't progressed enough offensively to have a dynamic enough offense to be a title contender anymore (unless there's some type of perfect storm scenario) and he took advantage of a weak conference while at FSU.

2013 Auburn wasn't a great team by any stretch of the imagination and talent wise was totally outmatched yet only lost by 3.

Jimbo beat up the ACC again in 2014 but then got his arse totally kicked by a far less talented Oregon team in the first round of the first CFP.

This is an interesting conversation. Fisher tends to be conservative with his offense, but he will run it up with the right QB. He's been building the talent level at A&M (this year will have the horses), but the key is QB

Mond was a game manager. The next two are willing to stretch the field a bit more. I'm interested to see A&M's offense next year. We are still going to run it quite a bit, but I think you will see more "oomph" in A&M's passing game this year. IF the WR's are healthy enough to trust

Kirby can recruit, but development has been lacking.

The biggest factor in FSU's decline IMO was Rick Trickett. He's responsible for their garbage OLs and Jimbo wouldn't fire him for some reason.

This is not true by any measure. It’s a laughable narrative started by rival fan bases. Considering he just broke the UGA record for draft picks both total and in the first three rounds. Also the 5 stars that actually stay with the program are drafted considerably higher than the national average. Carry on though.

I mean he was there from 2007-2017 so he was apparently doing something right.

Objective Kaiser: [ x ]ON [__]OFF

Jimbo is good when he is on his game, but he has had some whoppers when he is off. I still don't think he has fully settled in yet. Still way too many holes that have never been filled.

Kirby, on the other hand, has shown he can get it done consistently. At the same time, he has had an EMBARRESSMENT of talent riches, so it's hard to say. He certainly can recruit like a motherfricker.

Explain this then:

quote:

Jan. 4, 2007
Tallahassee, FL –
Florida State Head Coach Bobby Bowden announced Thursday the hiring of Rick Trickett as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line coach at Florida State. Trickett, who comes to FSU from West Virginia where he held the same title for the last six seasons, replaces Mark McHale whose contract as offensive line coach will not be renewed.
