Spurrier built an unstoppable and exciting juggernaut from a program that really didn't have that much history prior
Meyer was approaching Saban GOAT territory until he left UF abruptly
I prefer Spurrier because of the Fun and Gun and his always underrated defenses, they really made the games exciting to watch. I never got that feeling watching Meyer-coached UF teams.

Urban didnt have to content with peak Free Shoes University and Bobby Bowden. If Steve met the fsu that urban faced he probably would have played for 5 championships

This thread is about the coach
Like I said it’s debatable, because Urban wouldn’t have the opportunity at football without the foundation Spurrier set. Coaching is easier when you can recruit the players to a proven program. I could argue Spurrier as the better coach because he changed the game at Florida in the 90’s. Urban doesn’t have the coaching/ players at Florida without what Spurrier did. Different time eras. Spurrier is arguably better than Urban. Did Urban ever bring a program into relevance or did he have to go to an already proven program?

He did a phenomenal job turning Utah into a power. The majority of ute football history has been average. Florida didn’t just say hey zook has this team ready to compete let’s go get some unproven guy. Also the osu job. The optics then were Ohi-slow state. Ppl were tired of seeing uncompetitive big ten teams(namely osu) get trounced by sec competition. The narrative was they can’t get the talent in the Midwest to compete with the south(most ppl thought Miami got cheated vs osu won). I think that’s one of the reasons Les stayed away from Michigan when they tried to get him home. Once urbs knocked off bama, osu instantly got their street cred back.

this
there is a saying about the condition of the program when a coach arrives, and the condition of the program when they leave
florida football was in the shite can when meyer left…

Spurrier never allowed a murderer to play on his team.
Did Meyer? Who murdered someone while playing for Meyer?
As for the thread topic, Spurrier is and always will be the most important figure in Florida football regardless of who was the better coach.

If a majority of the major polls picked you, claim it. If one poll picked you, don't. That goes mainly for the Vols

Spurrier:
quote:
Steve Spurrier coached at Duke University from 1987 to 1989, leading the Blue Devils to a winning season in 1988 and their first ACC Championship since 1962 in 1989. During his time at Duke, Spurrier's teams also appeared in their first bowl game since 1960, and his offenses broke numerous school and conference records for scoring, passing, and total yards.

That championship is a myth. Duke finished 6-1 in conference play, Virginia also finished 6-1 in conference play. Virginia beat Duke head to head.

The ACC did not have head-to-head tiebreakers in 1989. They're both recognized as champions for that year.
Same with 1998, when FSU beat GaTech but they shared the championship.

Spurrier won one in twelve. I'm taking Urban.
