Definitely not Lyle

Dan Mullen and I don't even think it's particularly close.

Coach O is not and will never be the #2 coach in the SEC, his last experience coaching in the SEC is all the proof you need. Amazing recruiter, but shite coach who got lucky this season with a Les Miles team. We're just gonna have to wait until Saban retires until the next top SEC coach emerges from the ashes.

Probably have to go with Mac at this point but it is a huge drop off after Saban

Shocking from an LSU writer.. Truly shocking To answer who he has to beat to earn that title, Saban
Go back and read the OP please. You completely missed the point here.

Shows how much stock you should place in a coach's first few games.
If you say Mason, you have to consider Mullen.
He took a horrible Croom team with a midget QB to 5-7 playing the toughest schedule in the country.
Then went 9-4 with a 2-star Chris Relf at QB.
After 7-6, 8-5 and another 7-6 season, he had a 10 win season where he had MSU #1 for five weeks. Another 9 win season last year, and while this year was a challenge - has them in a 7th straight bowl game.
You can't praise Mason for going 6-6 in his third season without giving more credit to Mullen for what he has done.

I don't know if he's #2 or not but Mullen doesn't get enough credit, IMO. With a good program that has some recruiting chops, he would be an excellent HC. State is lucky to have him.

Why am I the only one who immediately thought Hugh Freeze?

Easily Coach Yaw Yaw.

To pick a general consensus then, without actually counting votes, if it's between Mullen & Mason, to use an old line bout The Bear, which could take the other's team & beat his old one? Could Mullen coach Vandy to a win over the Dawgs, or Mason the Dawgs over the Dores? The writer's comments came from a pro & con story on Coach O, and this was as part of the pro's, his opinion being Coach O has a good a CHANCE as anyone else. His cons were all pretty much what the haters have been saying.

Mullen is a good coach when he wants to be. He's a great qb developer and system guy.

You can argue McElwain (blah), Malzahn, Mason, Bert, or Mullen for number 2 and I wouldn't argue much. Not trying to be braggy or anything, but its harder for SEC West coaches to be considered good when you basically have AT LEAST 1 automatic loss every year to Bama. 1 less loss a year means better bowls and more recognition, possibly being talked about for the playoffs later in the season, etc. Its a huge difference.
