It really is amazing what Spurrier did at UF, and to think he "underacheived" based on the previous 100 years of football at UF is absolutely laughable.
From his Heisman victory, to his SEC championships and NC... Spurrier is florida football.

Exactly. FSU and Miami were both WAY ahead of us on a national level.
Miami, sure, FSU OK.
Who exactly was the premier program in the 70s in before when Miami was a small private school struggling to keep the program alive and FSU was known as the school Burt Reynolds played for?

Not based on what happened the previous 85 years, but based on what could have been. As you can see, all 3 big Florida schools got remarkably better starting in the 80's. This was due to the population exploding as well as the high school talent pool. It was not if but when for UF and the Bear even went so far as to call us a sleeping giant. For FSU and Miami to have a better decade than UF in the 90's was an underachievement in my opinion. He hated to recruit and it allowed the other 2 schools to prosper. I think he has done arguably as good of a job at SC as he did at UF considering what he was up against.

I will tell you who's little brother if you weren't aware.

South Carolina
Florida State
I would agree with that

what kind of stupid shite is this? I mentioned that Auburn was little brother in the OP. No argument needed.

In general the flagship school is the "big brother", and the aggie school is the "little brother". The only state where that's opposite is South Carolina.

In the 1970s I don't think you can really point to a premier program in FL. They were all just meh.

And what if both schools are part of two separate university systems? (Florida and Florida State are both part of the University of Florida System. University of Texas and Texas A&M are two separate university systems)

Alabama and Auburn are two separate systems

I didn't read much of the thread. But id agree with your list. We may be dominating Clemson right now, but they've dominated us a lot longer.
However, Clemson ain't no top 20 program.

And since it was before 1990, it doesn't really matter.

I would say there wasn't a program of any stature in the state of Florida in the 1970s. At least until Howard Schnellenberger arrived at Miami in 1979. He had a national title by 1983.
But Coach Bryant did see the potential of Florida before most others. As early as the 70s, he said that if the right coach was found "we would all be chasing them".

Gifted a national title in 83 more like it.

Why did it take so long for Florida to get good?

Clemson's more like a red-headed stepchild than a little or bigger brother, and lately we've beaten them like one.

Sure, but back then every state had one "premier school", Texas-Texas, Arkansas-Arkansas, Alabama-Alabama, SC-Clemson, Miss.-USM, Ohio-Ohio State, etc.
Florida and California are unique in that all the schools (for the most part) have shown they can be great or on a dumpster fire level in a matter of years, depending on the coach.

segregation...Florida State and Miami were horrible until the 80s. Florida was average.

Like someone said earlier, it wasn't just us. None of the FL schools were that good until the 80's.

They had to figure out how to do it without cheating.
