USC has the number 1 defensive player...Bama has the number 1 defense...

Alabama... Then there's LSU, UF, USC, and even perhaps Vanderbilt in the mix for the next in line. Vandy's defense has been legit the past 2 seasons, and they return most of their starters (only lose 5 I believe with 6 or more starts). LSU loses 9 from '12, UF loses 7 and USC lost 6...
LSU loses 6 starters off their defense, not 9.
Has a lot of experience and talent returning, too.
The biggest myth in the SEC right now is that LSU lost everyone. They return 14 starters overall and 33 of 44 from the 2 deep.

I listed players LSU lost that according to their official stats started 6 or more games. That is what I consider to be substantial starters when they are deemed good enough to start half a season's worth of games. And I was wrong: LSU loses 8 of those players, not 9:
Minter: 13/13
Reid: 13/13
Simon: 13/13
Logan: 13/12
Montgomery: 13/10
Mingo: 13/10
Downs: 13/10
Edwards: 13/6 (tied for 2nd on team in sacks, 6th in TFL)

The bolded names reflect those players that were not starters and/or did not play significant minutes the year prior to last season. Those guys were pretty good, and they basically came of the bench or did not play the previous season. The conference will just have to see how many more monsters are lurking on LSU's sideline.

Alabama, again. Best in total defense and scoring defense in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, etc. etc.

I'm going to say Florida just to be different and it's also plausible
Very plausible but UF is having the same problem LSU is having, a sputtering O that puts a lot more pressure on the D and skews the stats. Remains to be seen if the Cam hire and Pease hire will solve that.

Bama
Although I agree Clowney is the best defensive player in the SEC....or the country for that matter....
Damn I wished Saban could have closed the deal with him

Eh, someone said it in a thread. Thanks for your non-service anyway, I guess.

I'll bet $1MM E-dollars that Arkansas won't be first or last...
Bama/Florida are likely candidates

Answer is easy
The Gamecocks because of this player...
One player does not make a team great.
He is a great player don't get me wrong. USCe will not have the best defense in the SEC because of one player.

Minter is officially shown as starting 11 games in 2011...he was 5th on the team in tackles...you should've bolded Mingo's name before you bolded Minters, as Mingo only started 4 games. Still, he led the team in TFL and was 2nd in sacks...
Downs and Edwards are best examples for the point I think you're trying to make....the other ones seems to have been huge contributors to the defense even when they weren't primary starters. For '13 you can include DT Anthony Johnson in that discussion. Perhaps Ronald Martin and Jalen Collins too. LSU brings back starters Barrow, Mills, and Loston as returnees who have started 6 or more games in '12.
