It will never happen as long as Title IX is in place. You will continue to see men's sports disappear and there won't be anything new added.

Surely you jest. Over the years:
Football: Hogs 7 Tide 10 & Saban 17 Hogs 0
Basketball: Hogs 36 Tide 33
Baseball: Hogs 41 Tide 47 ..... this one really surprised me
Men's Track and field:
Hogs 18 .....triple crowns (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track)
I may be mistaken but I don't think the Tide have won more than a hadful of one of the three, much less a triple crown

How does Title IX work exactly. Does it require a set number of scholarships for female athletes, or a number equal to the number of male athletes?

This is merely a dumb hypothetical.
I’m just recommending our worst sports.

This is just a hypothetical, ya fricking moron
Obviously I presently don’t want LSU to discontinue any programs. That wasn’t the point of the thread.
Five medals is pretty weak. Oof

What does this even mean?
How many portal players can we afford? How does that relate to anything regarding this thread?

I hate to break it to you, but it takes money to run these minor and major sports.

I would cut Arkansas football.

Okay? LSU’s NIL program is just fine? That wasn’t the point of the thread.
And even then LSU is still elite in that category too so I don’t know wtf your point is

What happens if they do away with scholarships for players that are getting paid? Do those people still count towards title 9?
The schools still have to provide similar opportunities. If they end all of the athletic scholarships for men's and women's sports, and then proceed to cut all the women's sports while letting football, men's basketball, and maybe baseball carry on, U.S. Congress will howl - and the Supreme Court will probably back them up all the way.
Posted on 7/15/24 at 9:39 am to RelentlessTide
Probably mostly men's sports. Baseball and men's cross country would likely be the first to go.
Part of me says basketball should go away too since we suck at it, but that won't realistically happen.

Let me put it another way.
LSU Transfer Rankings:
2022 - 3rd
2023 - 5th
2024 - 41st

There are officially two ways to qualify.
First is based on a percentage equal to the percentage make up of the student body. So if your school is 55% female and 45% male then you should have around 55% of your athletic scholarships go toward women and 45% toward men (there's a fudge factor built in there, but that's the general gist of it).
The other way to qualify is the "Stanford" way. Schools with enough money can simply offer full scholarships to all the NCAA scholarship sports. Stanford is the only school who really does this... they offer EVERY scholarship sport the NCAA allows. They have enough money to do this. That's why Stanford won the Sears cup so many times. If you take part in 37 sports compared to 20-22 for other schools, you end up with a lot more points in "all-sports" rankings.
The big miscalculation with title 9 was that lawmakers expected schools to add womens sports to get to the percentage they needed to get to. Instead schools cut men's sports.

And Brian Kelly says he can't afford elite talent to fill weaknesses on this year's team. Coming in 41st in Transfer Football Rankings this year says a lot. Seeing is believing.
