I'd let him make the choice. One large, public state school degree is a/b as good as another.

You're son is going to State or Bama?

ETA: Vandy because of education, but how does it work as far as scholarships going? Only ask due to their tuition being so high.

If he were a mediocre 3* and had an offer from each of the 14 schools?

Texas A&M, he would be good enough to be their starting QB and have the entire offense ran through him with that ranking.

EDIT: How does this change if he is a 4* and a 5*?

Depends on what position he played.

Well, my sons are going to become men, so they are going to have to make their own decisions and I'm not going to send them anywhere.

Otherwise, I did it wrong.

There are exceptions, sure. UVA, Berkeley, Ga Tech, Michigan... probably UCLA these days. But not A&M. I'm sure your alma mater has some excellent programs, don't get me wrong. But its overall academic reputation is not on par w/ those schools. And it especially doesn't draw the type of water that Vanderbilt does.

Trying to be objective (and yes, it is tough), it depends on what the kid's strengths are and to a lesser degree what he thinks he wants his career to be.

If any sort of engineering, then in my experience the clear answer is A&M, but LSU is also a good choice. If I thought he'd make a good doctor, Vanderbilt easily. A lawyer, maybe Vanderbilt, probably Ole Miss.

I don't mean to leave out SEC East schools (edit: other than Vandy), I just don't know that much about them. I've known a few good engineers from Florida, but that's it.

I really hate the "what is the best school?" questions. The only good answer is "it depends."

1) Ole Miss
and if for whatever reason he didn't get an offer from them and only them, I'd probably send him to LSU to play under Miles. Then probably Bama.

ETA: If Vandy offered him a full ride, I'd have a hard time not sending him there if Ole Miss didn't offer him.

Wouldn't you want your son to have a chance to play for championships while he was playing in college?

Doesn't sound like it.

A Vanderbilt degree is more important than any ring he would win.

Now if I were going to send him to a program that had a good chance of winning with a head coach that I like and feel like I could trust, Les Miles and LSU would be the place.
That's only if Ole Miss doesn't offer him anything for whatever reason.

And LSU is a great place to go for an opportunity to win a championship. Don't know what you're smoking.

If he's a contributor on that team, I don't know a/b that. I can't even imagine the advantages in business, politics, etc. a motivated USC player could negotiate for himself if he were a former member of our 2014 nat'l championship team.

Mizzou. As much as I dislike the whole not winning a lot thing last year, Pinkel really has set up a hell of a program for student athletes to have the foundation to be good people after football. Plus, we've put our fair share of kids into the NFL and won our fair share lately too.

Wherever he wants to go just so long as he understands when they're playing Kentucky my allegiances are split.

I could live with Mizzou to be honest. I was actually looking at going to grad school there here recently.

Hopefully Mizzou can offer you what you need. Hell of a school, and I really enjoyed the city. Plus, you get to be there while the real SEC transition over the next few years takes place, for better or worse.

I'd think as an Ole Miss fan you'd realize how much influence Momma's have.
