Michigan boasts the greatest football player of all time(Brady), greatest Olympian of all time (Phelps) one of the best shortstops ever (Larkin) and Chris Webber who was one of the best college basketball players ever. Pretty tough to beat. Could replace Webber or Larkin with Schembechler.

quote:Yet you fail to mention the advances in club and ball technology that allow today's golfers to hit a golf ball farther and straighter than ever before. Regardless of era, every golfer has had the same equipment as his peers, but the equipment advances artificially inflate the perceived ability of today's golfers compared to those that competed with Nicklaus.
may as well go ahead and discuss the competition argument that arises.
quote:This is just an ignorant statement. The beauty of golf has always been that any player, on any given weekend, could find something in his game and compete with the sport's best. That was as true in Nicklaus' day and it is true now. The big difference when Nicklaus competed was the size of the purses. Today's golfers can make a living with a couple of top 10 finishes a year. Back in the day, you had to win tournaments to make good money. If anything, the golfers Nicklaus competed against had more to play for.
Only a handful of players actually competed for majors. The sport has increased parity with time as more people gained interest, a trend that has started to explode in the current era. Tiger was competing against a larger number of people who could win if they played well if you go back and look at the major winners in late 90's / early 2000's

Rowdy Gaines primary Olympics was 1980 which were cancelled by Jimmy Carter. He would have won much more if not for that.
So the 1 event Rowdy actually won a medal in... the world record holder in 1980 was an Alabama swimmer, from South Africa. Rowdy wasn't beating Jonty Skinner. Mid 1981 Rowdy did break the 100 free record, but he was not faster during 1980. Which brings me to my next point, a year after the Olympics breaking a world record... and he's on a comeback 3 years later? Not reflective of reality. Feel free to continue arguing with someone who swam in college though. I'm sure you know more about my sport than i do
