If you said Dylan Raiola, you are correct.... Dodged a head case and a bullet

That's uh, that's not very good.

Seems like there are a lot more misses among the 5-star QB group than hits.

The knee-jerk brain trust that wants to howl at the moon every time an individual recruit chooses to let a bidding war dictate their choice should stop and ask why they think they know more than CKS and the coaches .

Kirby brought him onto our roster knowing he played for 4 different high schools in four years and 2 different colleges in 2 years.

I'm not saying that our staff didn't think that he displayed potential, and could be a good fit. I'm saying they refuse to get into a bidding war when he started to act like a punk.
Big difference.

We dodged many massive bullets.
We could have Arch Manning as our starting QB instead of Iceman Gunner Stockton right now in another timeline.

They intentionally filter out people who may be top recruits or very talented if they dont think theyll be an excellent culture fit at UGA. Part of that is yeah, youll get paid and all, but thats not really what youre here to do and shouldnt be your primary focus
At the same time they are probably the best in the country at evaluating undervalued high school recruits in the 3 star range, and those guys who we take are always good culture fits as well. One or more of them show up every single season and some become massive stars sometimes while others, very solid contributors. Jordan Davis and Ladd are just two examples of the former, Sacovie this year is an example of the latter.

There was no bidding war to keep him, I can believe that. But you don't think there was a bidding war to get him?

I think UGA prioritizes guys it already has on its roster who they recruit out of HS when it comes to who theyre most willing to be NIL flexible on. Nate Frazier this past off season is a good example, if he was coming out of HS and made demands about money UGA would just drop him from their recruiting board, but since he is coming into his third year starting and has shown to be a great RB at this level they were more willing to work with him.
This is why we arent very active in the transfer portal every year. They are supremely confident in their ability to identify talent out of HS and cultivate it once it gets on campus. Then those guys are the priority for paying them well and making sure they arent poached. The transfer portal is more used by us as a way to plug holes here and there with guys we think are better than the consensus on them is or see potential we can unlock for a player who is having a falling out with his current school. This is what happened with Khalil Barnes and Clemson, who was a pretty good player as a freshmen then his soph and junior seasons regressed and lost playing time. We bring him in and he has been absolutely killing it at Star.
There are a ton of benefits that come with operating your team and roster like this and they mostly are in line with the UGA ethos under Kirby. You get what you earn, the best player will start no matter seniority, etc. It also keeps continuity and collective experience together on your roster as best you can in this era of CFB.
For high school recruits imho we go and make our pitch about why coming to UGA is the best option for them, etc. If theyre a 5 star everyone is after explain we arent going to meet the top spending NIL schools for their pay as a freshman but this reason and this reason, etc is why you should choose UGA for a little less money over them. Then they either accept it or dont and we move on. This is the filter.

I think Curtis is going to be another 5-star QB who struggles and ends up playing for 2-3 teams and never measures up to expectations. Meanwhile unheralded guys like Bennett, Mendoza, Chambliss, Ward, and Mensah end up dominating. I am perfectly fine if Smart never gets a 5-star QB. They usually aren't worth the effort.

Deep might be as jaded as I am about the sport. Impressive.

With the amount of money being thrown around for 5-star QBs, I'd probably recommend my son go to the highest bidder. In the long run it really doesn't matter what school you go to. Any team can produce a first round draft pick. I'm sure Raiola is crying all the way to the bank and will still be an early round draft pick. These guys are only thinking about the NFL. If a really good college team makes the best offer, that is great. Win-Win. If a not so good team makes the best offer...take the money and just enjoy the ride.

I mean youre free to think this way but I can guarantee you that recruits who do are filtered out almost immediately by UGAs staff.
This is almost demonstrably false and we have innumerable examples of why it is in the NIL era. If your goal is to actually make it to the NFL and be good when you get there instead of total garbage it absolutely matters a ton where you choose to play in college, give or take to what degree depending on position. For QBs it might be more important than for any other. If all you care about is making as much money as possible right now, then sure your perspective is fine. You just wont be doing it for UGA, nor do we want you here.
Extremely unlikely. He has never been anything more than meh-average in college and just played one of the worst games ive ever seen a high profile QB play for Oregon against UCLA. Ewers was also just as highly rated and a MUCH BETTER qb in college and was a 7th round pick.
This is pretty much in direct contradiction with all you have said to this point. Do they care about the NFL and solely the NFL, and how well a school can develop them, prepare them, and improve their draft position? Or do they care about making as much money in NIL while in college as possible? You have declared it is somehow both when that isnt really possible.
That is certainly a choice. Again, we dont want these type of people anywhere near our football program even if theyre the next coming of Peyton Manning or Larry Fitzgerald.

He was never on our roster, he left us standing at the altar on signing day and signed with Nebraska. That was also before he had been at any college, though he’s now stinking things up at college #2.

Who am I thinking of? We took some hot shite transfer that sat on our bench for a year then transferred out again.

You mean the black guy who started at UF then went to AZ state then came here as the 4th stringer for one year and left?
Cant remember his name

Totally forgot about him since he was in and out so fast.

Ah yes, the clown who was asking for nearly $15 million.
I think he ended up getting something like $800K, but he had has lawsuit against Florida - not sure what he got out of that. Now the backup at Mississippi State. If/when he ever gets put in a game, the stadium sound guy should play the Nelson Muntz "HA-ha!" clip.
