I think Auburn-Baylor may have the most direct impact on a program - I think AU losing makes it much harder for Freeze to retain his job. If I'm at 35% fired at the end of 2025 right now, I think losing that game takes it to 50-50.
If Auburn loses to Baylor, I think they will also lose at least 5 of these games: @Oklahoma, @Texas A&M, Georgia, Missouri, @Arkansas, @Vanderbilt, Alabama.
I don’t think Hugh will survive if he finishes the regular season at .500 or below. A loss to Baylor won’t get him fired. But putting a team on the field that loses to Baylor probably will.

LSU plays 7 of pate’s top 25.
LSU has lost too many openers.
Clemson is a must win.

considering we have a 12 team playoff there is no game in week 1 that will ever be a "must win".

I agree. Of course Auburn could lay an egg and then go 7-5 or 8-4 or whatever so that Hugh survives, but I think it's more likely than not that the Baylor games sets the reasonable tone for the year. And if that's a loss, it really makes the hill harder to climb for Hugh.
Re: Alabama since someone mentioned it, I'm not sure it is all internet talk. I think the reality is that a lot of people anticipated the guy to follow Saban would be a rental. If it just so happens that Alabama isn't meaningfully in the hunt in his first two years (even if they are completely fine seasons otherwise), I think that inevitability only grows.
In other words, I'm not trashing KdB for sport, I just think it was always going to be an uphill battle to sustain a long tenure in that spot and sometimes expectations have a way of becoming reality.

If Georgia loses their opener against Marshall it will feel like the Apocalypse for Georgia football.

Yet if we win the league we would still make the playoffs.
Hence =/= "must" win

If you lose to Marshall you will look back at the end of the season and realize that was the moment the wheels fell off.
It may not be a must win on paper. But in reality if you were to lose to Marshall this season would likely be a complete bust for Georgia. Not just because you lost a game, but because of what losing that game would say about the team.
There are only a handful of examples I can think of over the last 10 or so years when a team that lost their opening game finished in the top 10. It can happen, but it is rare.

If Bama drops the opener to an FSU team that went 2-10 last season? Uh, yeah, that's basically Auf Weidersehen to ol Kalen.
The Suckeyes lose everybody from that phony, paid-for-in-full, 2 loss championship team, so I'd expect the Horns to put them back in their place.

There's zero reason for Bama to be thinking of parting ways already.

Why not? We have a $10M coach that is is past his third year and just got a shite ton of transfers with the NIL money. What the frick else does he need to be expecting to win this game?

Don’t forget that everyone here stuck a fork in Dabo years ago. Clemson was done. They couldn’t win the ACC, there was no way they could compete with SEC teams.

If Brian Kelly loses another opener he might need police protection to return to Baton Rouge

If you are “expecting” LSU to go into Clemson and win, then you are not very bright, and are a damn fool.
Think LSU can win, Want LSU to win, hope LSU wins, all valid. “Expecting” LSU to go into Clemson and beat a Top 5 loaded Clemson team is ridiculous.
I truly believe LSU can win at Clemson, but I’m not expecting them to and sure as hell not ready to burn Kelly at the stake if he doesn’t beat a Top 5 loaded team on the road.

What are the expectations now of most LSU fans?
Four years ago most LSU fan here said they expected Brian Kelly to play for a national title; many expected a win or two; by the end of his fourth season. They said if he couldn’t compete for national championships he wouldn’t make it past year four.
What are the expectations now in year four?

How many years does Brian Kelly have be at LSU so that you would expect him to win an opening game like this? 8 years? 10 years? 15 years? How much money does he need to get paid for you to expect him to win a game like this? 15 million? 20 million? 30 million?

I wouldn’t “expect” Alabama at their height, under Saban, to win a game like this. I sure would think they damn well could, but wouldn’t “expect” it.
I “expect” Kelly to make the playoffs this year. If he doesn’t, his seat should be red hot.
But “expecting” any team (That includes Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, etc) to win a game at Clemson, when they are returning the bulk of their roster, QB, and have 5 players projected as NFL1st rounders is just nuts man.

Nick Saban would have expected to win. Every Alabama player would have expected to win. Every Alabama fan would have expected to win.
