The floor for attendance there is about 55k. No matter who is playing. It’s been great even when there isn’t a team from Texas playing.
You can think it’s touristy or whatever, but San Antonio around Christmas is a big draw and it’s between Christmas and New Years when people can take time off.

I don't consider it an "also-ran" bowl - due to its long standing existence - the Gator Bowl is a historical bowl game that deserves the same degree of appreciation as the Orange Sugar Cotton has across the South -
Alabama Auburn Florida Georgia Kentucky LSU Ole Miss Mississippi State South Carolina Tennessee as well as then Georgia Tech have all played in the Gator under the SEC banner -
Arkansas played in the Gator prior to SEC affiliation - as did Oklahoma -
Vanderbilt is the lone original SEC team to have not played in Jax - Texas has made no appearances yet it its history -
the SEC is 29-16-1 in the Gator which is the best of any conference - the ACC is next at 19-15 - meanwhile the big1t9en is a mere 3-10 - Michigan is 1-2 and Ohio S is 0-2 -

Bowl games are dying off
When it goes to 16 some will get out of bowl business
Not if there is money in it for ESPN. ESPN basically owns most of the bowl games. I know on the surface they lose tons of money but ESPN has to be making money off of ads and other things for the bowls to still be alive.

Holiday Bowl in San Diego is the winner
I went there a couple of years ago for Oregon vs. UNC.
Great weather
Downtown SD on the water
Lots of fans
Pre game and halftime flyovers (planes and helicopters) and parachutes into the stadium by the Navy
After game, visited friends in Palm Springs for great winter golf

while I don't think the Gator is on the same level as the Orange, Sugar, Cotton and of course Rose...
It is on the next level. And although it has been surpassed by the Peach, and Fiesta Bowls in status... as they rocketed to the top tier. Historically, the Gator Bowl is probably in with them.
The Fiesta Bowl didn't start until 1971 and was begun to highlight the WAC (mostly Arizona State). Then ASU joined the PAC and the Fiesta started turning heads when they started getting really high profile match ups. Then they hit the jackpot when they got #1 Miami and #2 Penn State to play after Jan 1st...prime time...in 1987 ('86 season). That was what put the Fiesta Bowl within reach of the Big Boys and they actually surpassed the Cotton Bowl.
The Peach Bowl kind of came up as Atlanta matured as a world class city. I was a low-mid level bowl about like the Tangerine Bowl for years.. then bang... it shot up to the top tier... but I don't remember a defining moment for the Peach like their was for the Fiesta. Maybe somebody else does.

Went to Birmingham twice.
First game we lost in the most "don't give a damn fashion" to UCONN. Ran out of Papa Johns pizza at halftime at the Papa Johns Bowl.
Second game lost to South Florida in overtime. Both games were freezing cold. Always fun with the grown kids but damn

I’m with you on Music City Bowl. Particularly if you are going for 2 or 3 nights. Lots to do and enjoy.
Haven’t been to Vegas Bowl but have been to Vegas. This would be my second vote.
Neither one of these are dying off though.

Music City Bowl because New Years in Nashville is fricking awesome!
It helped that I was there for an LSU/ND matchup that brought a big crowd. The Irish were fun to party on Broadway with.

I'm guessing TV or lower quality matchup is the reason why,
this and losing their tie-in with the SEC. It was a bigger bowl when there were half as many bowl games. In that LSU/Notre Dame game, LSU was a 9-3 top 15 team. In the 90s, there were only a couple of instances where one of the teams wasn't ranked, and since the 90s there has never been a ranked team play there, albeit there were still some classic games like the A&M/State snow game. But them losing the SEC kinda killed the interest

They’ve since moved it away from Petco, which means you can’t just leave the game and walk out into downtown SD. But it’s still a great location. SD is a destination town by itself. It’s a US city everyone should ultimately get a chance to see at least once.

I think it’s possible the playoff actually just raises the profile of all post season college football. Again: ratings were great last year. Colorado and BYU got 8 million viewers.
The fans aren’t tuning out because their teams aren’t in the playoffs. It seemed to make them even more interested in the bowls.

The Holiday Bowl use to be a good bowl & match up to watch.. Not sure about now with all the conference shake up frickery.
The Sugar Bowl is always fun to go to in NOLA ( just make sure the last 2 escaped inmates are found before going this year

The Birmingham Bowl is also a uniquely miserable experience.
I heard it got significantly better when they built the new stadium.

The new venue is too small to host a playoff bowl, and it’s kind of small now for even the next step down, unfortunately.
If you’re a big time Big Ten school left out of the playoffs, San Diego is a nice consolation prize though.
