So winning your conference doesn't mean anything if the loser can win the national title while you stay home? That makes perfect sense. *SMH*

No because "TOP 4" is stupid if you have 5 teams/groups eligible.

No. Conference titles should be something to be celebrated.

I used to be the complete other end of the spectrum on this, but id love a 16 game playoff, not for fairness or inclusion or anything like that...but just because it would be fun as a fan

12 teams.
Top 4 get byes (that makes the current top 4 relevant to the discussion).
All 5 P5 champs get auto bids. That makes the conferences happy.
Then, pick the top 7 remaining teams. This covers Notre Dame when good, the occasional Cinderella like UCF/Boise, and usually the 2nd best team from every big conference. In reality you might just see one team from a big conference (say, Oklahoma), and more than 2 from another (say, Bama, UGA, LSU or Ohio St, Michigan, Penn St for example).
This year, going straight from the CFP poll, you get:
Bracket 1
Alabama vs UCF/Washington
Oklahoma vs UGA/Penn St
Bracket 2
Notre Dame vs Ohio St/LSU
Clemson vs Michigan/Florida
That way, it's more open to outsiders like UCF, and also still rewards tough conferences: the SEC would get 4 teams in. Interestingly, the Big 10, which didn't get a team in the Top 4 this year, would get 3 teams into the playoffs in this format, whereas Oklahoma remains the sole Big 12 team.
Every single game in that system would be interesting, and the first rd winners definitely could win against some of the teams given a bye. And just for the sake of argument, if the finals ends up being Georgia against Ohio State, it might not be as glamorous as Bama/Clemson, but nobody could say they didn't earn it on the field.
Go ahead and drop the bowls. People just aren't into them anymore, now that there's a playoff.

OK the notion of anyone getting "byes" in the college football beauty pageant is offensive. This is not the pros where all the teams are generally playing each other.
College teams pick their schedules and are either lucky to be in a less competitive conference..or not.
Byes in college football are just plain nonsense. 8 teams or leave it at 4.

It will be 8 when it happens. 5 conference winners and 3 at large
And when folks see attendance in the first round games looking like attendance at the PAC 12 CCG, and 13-0 SECC vs. 8-5 AACC, you’ll understand that 4 teams was the best way to do it.
They'll understand when 3 of the final 4 are SEC teams.

Neither. We're handing out participation trophies as it is. Last year was the only year more than 2 deserved to be playing for it all.

Why should the Pac 12 automatically be eligible? Why should that be etched in stone? They're barely better than a G5 conference.

You think the rest of the country has SEC fatigue now? Just wait until the final four are Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and LSU.

Nah. These are kids that are not getting paid. 6 is fine. Really any more than that and you're putting teams in that are garbage.

I say 8 teams... conference champs and committee votes on the 3 remaining. Similar to nfl.
We don’t have all the subjective crap in the nfl.

If you go 8 teams, then every bowl game not tied to the playoffs should get cancelled. If they don't, then you'll see more draft eligible players skipping their bowl games and that's fine. But at that point, you stop counting that win or loss against the team/coach.

4 has been great, dont see the issue

The subjective crap is the only thing pushing power 5 teams to schedule tougher OOC.
If you make G5 scheduling OK, you will get what you get and people will continue to bitch for it.

The NFL has about a 1/4th the number of teams as College. They also have a sterile regular season where a few losses aren’t a big deal. Can we quit trying to turn College Football into NFL-lite?
