You can still make an argument that he is #1

His record is 323-85

Saban’s is 264-66

So fairly similar there.

You can make a case that 1950 was a NC as well at UK for the Bear. They were 11-1 and won the Sugar Bowl over Oklahoma.

So I would say that Bear and Saban are 1A-1A

Bama in the 60s and 70s was not the golden boy of college football that Alabama is today.

They weren't? Bowls tripped over each other trying to get Alabama to pick them, and often even let them pick their opponents. Paterno recounted a story of talking to Bryant, and asking him why he picked Penn St to be Alabama's opponent. He said Bryant said "because I know we'll kick your arse."

Imagine Saban's absolute mastery, Spurrier's swagger, and Pittman's charm all in one coach.

You could even make the argument that Bryant's almost-kinda championship at Kentucky, plus his 6 at Alabama is more impressive than Saban's one at LSU and his 6 at Alabama. Probably harder to do what Bryant did at Kentucky than what Saban did at LSU.

No. They weren't. Alabama was routinely passed over by Midwest teams. Yes, Bryant did make that boast... for the Sugar Bowl. A bowl game that was more or less effectively controlled by the SEC.

I get that you love Saban. That is fine. But what he did and what Bryant did are two completely different things. Different eras, different rules, and different support from the national media.

An argument can be made that he’s still #1 solely because of doing more with less.

but arguments could be made for coaches like Meyer, Swinney, and Carroll as well.

Meyer might be near Wallace Wade/Frank Thomas territory historically...but Saban and Bryant are in a different stratosphere.

You could easily say 4 of the 7-8 all time greatest college football coaches all coached at Alabama.

Nobody under 65 years old has ANY clue about Coach Bryant and what he did for college football. I get mad, then sad, about what young folks think about the man who was an icon for college football.

I'm 57..I know full well what he did.. I grew up in the 70's and lived through that dynasty.

Never thought I'd see it again until Nick arrived

Technically, so has 0’s.

He never had a style. Granted he wanted to run a spread offense... which i doubt is dead, since everyone runs a spread.

Well how does he compare against the great LSU coaches of the era...oh wait, there arent any

Um.... I'd say 0-3.

0 - dead
3 - living coaches that have won a title for LSU

No doubt Saban is a great coach and perhaps the greatest.

But consider this...

Without the BCS format, he doesn't win a NC at LSU. USC was #1 all year. The coaches poll only voted LSU #1 because contractually they had to.

Without the BCS formula, Bama doesn't win the natty in '11, 15 or 17.

Under the old system..Saban probably only has 3 championships..'09, 12, 20. And 09 isn't guaranteed.. Texas may have beaten some underling in the Orange Bowl and been awarded the Natty.. its happened to Bama b4

He threw out of the wishbone, something option teams almost never did.

He always had great defenses and still would.

He always adapted to his players as does Saban. He wasn't afraid of change.

He always hired great assistants and this is where he edges Saban and it's not even close.

Bowden, Schnellenberger, Dye, Cholly Mac, Stallings, Dietzel, Danny Ford

This here is why you could still mount an argument that he's the GOAT coach over Saban. He never had the talent gap that Saban has had. I guess it depends on what your definition of "coach" is and whether you think he could have created such a talent gap in his era but didn't or if the structure of college football was such then that it wasn't possible.

He had more of a talent gap than anyone actually. No limits on scholarships in those days. You could sign and bench as many players as you wanted.

That did not lead to a massive talent gap. Everyone else could do it too. His teams were not loaded with NFL talent.
