re: When will Auburn fans start claiming they don't care about football that much?

It is the wrong word to say that i "envy" other teams in down cycles, but there is something i can't quite figure out that makes your own fandom so much more relevant and exciting. i suppose it's just the personal pride of knowing you aren't a fair-weather fan.
I used to be a fan of the game and enjoyed watching the Bowls regardless of who was playing. Now the CPF is a beauty contest, and the Bowls are like watching a Spring Game.

oving a sports team is really just masochism every...single...year. why do we do it? idk. but only 1 team gets the real glory in the end.
The game used to have its own version of March Madness, now it just a way for ESPN to fill in time slots.

Lol why do Auburn fans care about basketball? They have been out of the 1st weekend of March Madness 1 time in 20 years.
Bruce has gone 1 time in 8 years. What a coach he is
South Carolina is the equivalent
When was the last time you guys went to the Final4, won conference championships, were ranked #1 in the nation, and produced top-3 NBA picks?

It has always been a beauty contest. At least since the 90's and you had your Spurriers out there throttling bit**** and spiking the score board.
the NIL may be a sport killer if it's not immediately reeled in.

I’m guessing you didn’t follow two years ago when Pearl and the Eagles went 13-14. What a coach
Hey retard, I've been following AU basketball since I was a student in the early 90s when Tommy Joe Eagles was the coach. I also watched through the Jeff Lebo and frickface Tony Barbee era.
Congrats on your Elite 8 appearances. They really don't mean shite. I'll take our SEC championships any day over that. Get to a Final Four in the post Bill Clinton era and get back to me.

Auburn fans love Auburn. Alabama fans love Alabama football.

But there were hundreds of judges. Now the 12 mindless committee members get their cues from ESPN analyst.

That's why they went with the vastly superior market of Cincinnati over Notre Dame in the playoffs this past season, because ESPN told them to.

They should have stopped caring last year when they lost to South Carolina with an FCS transfer as its starting QB.

I mean - did you care as much about football during the Mike, Fran, Mike and Mike era?
Exactly. The Updyke meltdown will be unprecedented once things go back to normal. Auburn is in the Shula stage right now. We follow it up with a homerun hire just as Saban is winding down, and there’s going to be a lot of domestic violence in the trailer parks once again when the tide is watching Auburn and LSU trade out turns being the SECW champs.

This is a fair criticism, but to be honest I’ve been slowly losing interest for years.
I do plan attending a game this fall for this first time since 2015.

Never claimed it was too restrictive
Yes you did. You said:

Not going to change until they expand the playoffs
Then you went on to say:
quote:
We do not know how teams match up when they do not play each other. So the CFP doesn't really give us the answers. If you have automatic berths you would get a better answer. Until then it is a beauty contest and a filler for ESPN.
You're missing your own point. The issue isn't that the playoff is a "beauty contest" where the wrong teams are getting in for the wrong reasons. The problem isn't that we don't know the answers; the problem is that we do. We all know that the three best teams this year are Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State. Having a playoff which includes those teams is just going to end up with one of them winning the title. But it is difficult to justify not including them because, again, we all know they're the best teams. Making a conference championship a qualification for getting into the playoff would help some, in that it would keep out the 2017 Alabamas and the 2021 Georgias, but it wouldn't solve the overall problem, which is that college football is not set up for a playoff system. College football fans think they want the best team to win the title each year, but they don't. What they want is for the team that has the best season to win the title each year. That is a subjective judgment, and that is why a subjective championship system worked so well for the sport.

Under what system in the past would a team in the Championship game have lost to an 8-4 team and gone to 4 OTs against a 6-6 team? I could have accepted it if the SECC was an automatic berth, but to have the beauty contest still the standard after what we saw was a joke.
"Why was Alabama in the playoff last year? They didn't deserve it. I wish college football would make conference championships a qualifier for getting into the CFP. That would fix things."
"Uh, Alabama won the conference last year. They would have gotten into the playoff under the system you're suggesting."
"Yeah, but that's different."
Posted on 8/24/22 at 12:06 pm to TheTideMustRoll
Of course my comments went over your head. I didn't say it was because of restrictions, it was how they were selected and there wasn't representation for a true champion. Four teams would work if those teams automatically earned their way in, meaning winning something in the regular season. Again, totally over your head.

Ok, little buddy. I'm sure you're right. You're just too smart for me.

I said if they won the Conference Championship that was different and acceptable. The beauty contest criteria has been in play more then a Conference Championship. Which is counter to every American Sport.

never.
How long after Saban retires will bama fans drop by half.

So you're not only banking on Auburn making a "home run hire" (because they're totally known for that
Yeah, sounds like a reasonable expectation.
