Not a player, but we had a basketball coach in the late 80s/early 90s named Tommy Joe Eagles. Great guy, but those teams were awful. Always thought that was the perfect Auburn name.

I always thought it was a nod to their African roots? Some are clearly made up, though.

I've lived in Africa. Those names aren't any more African than Kwanzaa.

And the ones that start with a random letter or letters like
D' or L'...would that be a combo of French and Roman?...there's gotta be an answer.

It goes way back before any of our times.

Giving children Latin or Greek first names was very common among the Southern "aristocracy"; the greatest example I can think of is the Mississippi Senator Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar.

Some blacks adopted it as being "high class", and over time the names got more and more original and customized.

Ok I nominate Big Kat Bryant(assuming his first name is actually Big), Tommy Joe Eagles(if we count coaches), and Pound Lamb, just because it is so funny, that is up there with Dam Son

That makes sense.
Imo, it's time to back off the "customization".

You’ve been getting double teamed.

LSU 7-3 over AU in the same decade.

Smoke is his nickname, though, isn't it? Is this Quindarious? (Which is, in some ways beter

Yes. He actually goes by Smoke though, not Quindarious. Not that much different from a guy whos name is Robert going by Bobby.
