In that case Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Texas all rank above Bama. In my area the Oregon bandwagon is packed.

Dude....

1) Harvard Law and John Hopkins medical school are graduate schools. You could still go to the state school you're a fan of for undergrad. People's fan allegiances 99% of the time belong to their undergrad alma mater - that's just the way it works.

2) The kind of people we're talking about as being trashy bandwagon sidewalk fans are not the type of folks who had to give up their dream of attending Big State U because they got accepted to MIT. They're the type that flunked out of the community college in their suburb.

You are correct. Graduate schools are where major universities truly make their reputation. You can still get in to both of those for an undergrad or pre-law or pre-med, but it does improve your chances to be selected to graduate programs at those schools if you attend there for your undergrad. It also holds the prestige in the name to pursue graduate education across the nation afterwards.

I thought name dropping Harvard Law and John Hopkins Medical would get the point across better than "an engineering degree from one of the military academies, University of Illinois, or Cal Poly..."

Am I alone in not understanding why it's unacceptable to be a fan of a school you didn't attend? I don't live in Louisiana, but I'm a Saints fan. Is that unacceptable too?

It's based on traditional views of college education and "student athletes".

The same analogy could be said about being a fan of a high school football team from a high school which you did not attend. I couldn't imagine being a student/alum of Fayetteville High School and yet wearing Little Rock Central t-shirts, putting Central stickers on my truck, and talking trash to Little Rock Hall fans.

It's a valid point in a discussion of allegiances. The point being you should cheer for the team which represents 'you'. 'You' being the student body/alumni of that school.

However, professional sports is different because regular people do not have a direct connection to that team outside of the city/state they represent. Although there is an argument against rooting for teams that are from a different city/state than you.

Really. Have you ever been outside Louisiana? You'd have to be a retard to believe Bama has more sidewalk fans than Texas or Ohio State.

I was under the impression that a sidewalk fan was a fan who wasn't a die hard that just occasionally roots for a team only when they are doing well.

For example, In Nashville, there are a ton of Alabama fans who just suddenly appeared in the last 5-6 years. Before that there where very few.

Georgia's got a shite ton, which I think they would admit. But I don't know how they compare to LSU, etc.

But based on our state's larger population I think in pure numbers they compete in this category.

Those are bandwagoners/frontrunners.

That's how I defined it too, until I started reading this board!

I've made the mistake of taking this post personal and that's always a bad idea. My bad.

It would suck. So..... I have no idea why people have such a big problem with it.

Hmm well let me think. I am FROM Georgia. Go to LSU. My father lives in Mississippi. I have lived in every state in the south at some point.
So yeah, I can safely say its alabama #1.

No. Everyone has their reasons. When I got out of military after a 10 year stint I went to USA (Mobile) due to family reasons. Having lived in BR area during my formative sports years (age 12-17) I was always a LSU fan and always will be.
