Beautiful country.
I wouldn't live anywhere in Tennessee west of Chattanooga. I lived in SWVA near Kingsport. Good people. Good area. But, I love the Alabama coast, the lakes, and hill country near and north of Little River Canyon.

The road system is terrible, I think they are trying to compete with Atlanta on worst road systems in the world.
Sorry bud, you need to get out more. Austin and Nashville are a 1000X worse. much of which is no fault of their own. Its just what happens when a Zillion people move in a 20 year span. No time to build supporting infrastructure with that level of growth. Thats exactly what happen to the ATL in the 1990-2005 time frame.
Much the same is going on now in Huntsville. In that situation you get the good- great eco and business opportunities with the bad- congestion and traffic.
Huntsville's road system is not bad vs many other boom towns.

I narrowed a moving list from Austin once between Col Springs and Huntsville
that's funny because I left Huntsville for Co Springs. But the Huntsville I grew up in doesn't exist any more; for that matter I can say the same about Co Springs. I can see how someone who likes bigger towns and didn't know either one before might like them now but I miss the ones I knew back when. I don't even recognize Huntsville when I go back now to visit.
Things change, that's a fact of life but I've learned a new appreciation for the line from Eagles song "The Last Resort" that says "call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye".

This whole thread has me feeling nostalgic; I take a lot of pride in being a Southerner and there's a lot that I miss about it, mostly the people and food, but I do NOT miss the humidity!

Used to live in TN. I loved living there. Depends on where you go as any other state. But Eastern Tennessee is absolutely beautiful.
Yeah I spent a year SE of Knoxville back in the 90s and loved it there.

Well that's not true at all. I have the luxury of being able to live in any state I want.
I pay way less taxes in Florida than I would and have elsewhere. Way less.

Franklin, TN beats everywhere in AL except Orange Beach.

I've lived all across the country from California to Florida.
I grew up between Nashville and North Alabama. Nashville isn't even as bad as Murfreesboro.
Texas is just full of assholes.

Depending on your preferences (unless you are just dead set on a beach life) and the locations, I don't think there is a wrong answer. Beautiful parts to each

I spent many weekends at Smith Lake as a kid. Always with the fear of getting sucked up by a sink hole.

I've only recently discovered it a few years back when my brother built a house there.

Murfreesboro has certainly gotten bad, but Nashville between 2:30PM and 7:00 PM is a complete shitshow. It's turning into Atlanta quickly. I live in Franklin and I could count on one hand how many times I go to Nashville a year. I avoid it at all costs.

There's only one choice, The Cultural Center of the Universe, Norman, Oklahoma.

Alabama doesn't tax retirement pay or social security, lower property and sales tax.
But, again, both are great options, as are Georgia and the Carolinas in the southeast.

I haven't lived in the area for the past 12 years, but Murfreesboro was a nightmare. It's just growing too fast and the roads couldn't handle it.
I remember when 440 didn't even exist. And now you have 840 so I would have thought it would be even better.
